Here's an interesting question from the pub quiz we were at tonight.
Think about it carefully, then give us your answer with a brief explanation.
We THINK we know the right answer, but the pub disagreed. I'll post our answer at the weekend, then see if you agree!
What is the absolute minimum number of times you must hit the ball over the net to win a set in a game of tennis, without any umpire intervention or rules infringements? Its a completely standard singles match, you verses one opponent.
[GK-customfield]Jeff![customfield-GK]The Prelude, in many ways, is a typical Japanese car but I would always put it in a list of all-time fave raves because its  V-Tec engine is just so amazingly sweet.
I've said before that this is the best mass produced engine of all time, and I'll say it again now.

6 games = 4 winning strokes per game whether it be aces or winning returns of serve

12

Your opponent could double-fault every one of their serves so you wouldn't have to return (ie hit the ball) in any one of the 3 games they served. If you aced all of your serves or your opponent returned into the net/beyond the by-line then you will only have hit the ball 12 times in the 3 games you have served.

Thats very good, Tim. But let me give you another thought. The set could go to a tie break? And then how much would you have to do to win?

It couldn't go to a tie break if you won every point, surely?

Alright, heres some clues about how we got our answer - which, BTW, my brother-in-law got in about 20 seconds when we were having a drink this evening --
1. You are both really useless players.
2. The set DOES go to a tie break.
3. Bear in mind, it is possible to win points by your opponents mistake.
There, thats all the clues you're getting. As I said, my brother in law got it this evening without any prompting, so I am sure our answer is correct.

Surely the initial question which states "the absolute minimum number of times" suggests you aren't a crap player as if you drop a point or return the ball twice to attain one that’s the minimum aspect gone.

From the above I read that you have the perfect game, but your opponent doesn’t. Much like N_Scooby's answer

Was your answer higher than the one provided by the pub? and has the pub answer been listed above?

Ok. I guess this has gone on long enough, the questions being asked make it seem much more complicated than we think it is. The Pubs answer was 12. Your opponent serves a double fault on every point, and you serve an ace on all your serves (3games, 4 aces each). You win 6-0, and have served 12 aces. (WELL DONE TIM) BUT>>>>>>>>>>>>
OUR answer is 1.
As follows. You both serve all double faults (you, at least, into the net (not over!) on all your serves. So you both win the game against the serve. 6-6, Tie break! In the tie break, using the same principle, (You still don't get a serve over the net), you will reach 5-5. Depending then only on who served the first point in the tie break, you go ahead 6-5 by either benefitting from your opponents double fault and then winning with the only time you served over the net and its an ace, or you go 6-5 with the ace, and your opponent loses the set to you with another double fault! 7-5, set won 7-6!

Nowhere near enough, 'cause I was stuck with being taxi driver yet again. This question was one of the 10 which had to be answered correctly to win a jackpot of over £230!!!!!!!!!!! Fortunately, in a way, we got 1 other answer wrong, so there was no big deal, but if we had got all other 9 right, I think that I, for one, would have been getting very agitated.
