Well as most of you are aware i recently bought my dads scooby off him as my next project , 2 simple reasons really , first it's had a fair bit of money spend on it already and was quite cheap , Second it was easy i didn't have to travel Anyway i had it for japfest this year , And as some of you remember the brakes failed after 3 or so laps , the clutch started to slip quite badly in 3rd,4th and 5th and water was pissing out the over flow which was later found to be the headgasket being gone and pressuring the water system. Good deal from my dad then (he did make good on the problems)anyway a few pics of it around track ![]() ![]() Suspension isnt great ![]() ![]() So to start off i got on and ordered the clutch (old one wasnt really gripping anymore) I got a API Modded exedy stage 1 organic clutch , which they rate for roughly 400bhp although alot of people swear by them for 430 ![]() I currently waiting on some information about the headgaskets before i order them (hurry up jay !!) I started off sunday morning stripping the engine out , i was so hungover it was unreal so i didnt get as much done as id liked . Just started just battery and induction out ![]() ![]() Then removed the inlet manifold(spider ) , Aircon (which wont be going back in) , Alternator , downpipe , all wiring, fuel lines / rails and injectors , coilpacks , radiator , fans even more piping (unreal amounts that aren't even being used !) and probaly loads more ![]() ![]() Pile of stuff i've taken off ![]() all that remains now is the block , power steering etc , gearbox and the turbo and downpipe (had stupid bolts on the manifold heat shield and i couldn't be assed :rolleyes: All of which should be removed next weekend , Gonna be stripping the engine down and replacing the pistons (just standard ones for now as im suffering from alot of piston slap) , headgaskets , RCM water pump , RCM oil pump , new shells head bolts , new seals all round , some porting of the heads and headers , parallel fuel rail conversion and i will be reversing the inlet manifold for shorter pipes on the intercooler setup . Plus alot of the brackets , intercooler pipes , intercooler and inlet manifold will be getting powder coated (when i find somewhere that will do it ) Hoping to have it all done for rotorstock but tbh it doesnt look like there's many people going so not really that fussed. Anyway ill update some time next week after i've got more to add |

http://scoobymods.com// is a good place to look for other mods you may not have thought of doing. I believe chrisscott either knows how to powdercoat or someone who can powdercoat. It seems a shame to take the engine apart and only put back in standard pistons etc |

I know , i was very tempted to just forge it but im saving for a stroker kit and new turbo , injectors etc all at the same time , Will check out the site see whats what Cheers |

if it hasnt got a closed deck block, dont spend any money on it stroking it etc, get a closed deck block... much stronger. also worh upgrading the cylinder heads for ones with solid lifters, early wrx/legacy heads start tapping and you cant fix them even with new tappets... knock sensor picks up the tapping as knock and hey presto your car is slow lol. (although you have ecutek iirc so it wont matter.) also are you getting the cylinders over bored? and oversized pistons fitted? if not its going to slap the same dude. I'm sure you know that though

The block is the closed deck , yeah I'm gonna change most of it on the second rebuild in a year or so , Its running a Simtek so not sure whats the difference between the Ectek etc

See here for Simtek info. http://www.simtekecu.co.uk/ My only problem with the Simtek is the lack of updates ,active knock control is the latest one and that was promised for the beginning of the year,problem is it's only really 1 bloke actually making them and doing the updates so he is under pressure all the time. |

A CDB is not the be-all and end-all of Subaru tuning. There are plently of cars out there running over 500 ponies with semi closed and open deck blocks....but as Stevey says the car already has a CDB. The point Lewis made about the heads is a valid one, heads with solid lifters are far better for big power...hydraulic suffer at big BHP, about 440bhp is the limit....If you can find V1-V2 RA heads or V3-V4 STI/RA heads they will be better for your build Steve, with the latter being the best due to wilder cams. As for simtek, IMO they are not as good as they are made out to be...Quite a few suffer from bad idle, mine included and i know atleast 5 that have been sent back for new chip sets. If the car is off the road what you driving to football tonight?

Regarding the heads , i wont be changing any of these this time , Moneys a little tight atm , We be on the list on the second build in a year or so , For now i'm happy with the power its more than enough for me to have fun in. Really need to sort out the brakes and handling before i consider more power |

Right managed to pull the engine out this weekend , But we did lose the life of our trusty poll ..... Its had pulled out 2 x 200sx engines , 2 x mini engines, But the scooby engine was just to much . Bent quite badly in the middle as we were lifting it out which was fairly scary :rolleyes: . Big john ordered a 2 ton engine crane a few days ago so should be ok to put back in No more doing my back in.Anyway a few pics of what ive been up to inbetween work and everything else . Just left the gearbox in , Wont be much happening to this bar the new clutch and some new fluid etc ![]() Old clutch looking a little worse for ware !! and a few of the flywheel before it goes away for some weight loss ![]() ![]() Removed manifold and turbo from engine ![]() ![]() Engine out and on our new engine table (old lounge table :D) ![]() ![]() Pulleys removed and cams unbolted etc ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Cams removed ![]() Heads unbolted and removed from main block (All abit grubby) the headgaskets on both sides where pretty worn / Pitted ![]() ![]() ![]() Sump removed and engine internals revealed ![]() ![]() All we managed tonight , Was pretty tired from work and wasn't really in the mood :rolleyes: Anyway pistons are in good condition and so are the cylinder liners . The heads are both been taken to our usaul engineer for testing to unsure all is flat and Ok to use . When the heads come back i will start the porting and regrinding of valves etc etc (hours of fun ) Might remove the pistons and rods etc tommorrow and start cleaning up the engine etc yay even more fun . anyway thats it for tonight |
