help im stuck as to what to buy for my birthday present. i have narrowed it down to two cameras.

Nikon D5000

Sony Alpha a500

now they both have great specs for my buget but i just cannot decide between them. i know there are some quite biased views and avid nikon lovers out there but in all honesty im an enthusiastic novice photographer.

anybody have any experience with these two cameras?

There's no replacement for displacement !

I would avoid Sony because you'll be limited by the lenses.

The Nikon D5000 has got good reviews, but the D90 is better if you can find one for similar money.

You really need to go to a good shop and handle them... some prefer Nikon, some Canon.

i have looked into the lense issue and the sony takes

compatibility
All Sony DSLR lenses and A-Mount bayonet lenses from Minolta and Konica Minolta

i thought that was quite a varied array of lenses? nikon is limited to nikon lenses arnt they?

It is, but there are hundreds of Nikon lenses available (and Canon) + all the third party lenses made to fit those makes.

Canon and Nikon have such a large percentage of the market... I would expect their fast glass to be superior to any of the Sigma / Tamron lenses that fit the Sony.

Definitely comes down to which you like the feel of (ooer).

At that price the bodies will be similar in terms of features... it's the lenses that will make the difference although don't expect miracles from 'kit lenses'.

Happy choosing.

thanks matey. i have been comparing the specs all night, the one added bonus of the nikon is the hd video recording but the sony has steady shot feature , auto high dynamic range and a higher iso speed range,

6 of one half a dozen of the other :wallbang:

tomorrow is going to be a difficult day to choose
