Honda To Close Uk Factory For Two Months

Output at the company's Swindon site, which manufactures the Honda Civic, will be cut by 21,000 vehicles as part of proposals to cut global production by 79,000.

The 4,800 staff employed at the UK factory will receive full pay during the closure.

The move comes as carmakers around the world fall into crisis, as the lack of available credit and economic downturn conspires to lower demand for new cars.

In the US, the world's largest motor market, car sales are at their lowest level for more than 17 years – leading to the General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, the so-called 'big three', pleading for a £25bn bail-out as concerns grow about their survival.

The latest figures in the UK show that production of new cars fell by 25.1pc in October, the lowest since 1991.

Honda had already announced it was cutting production by 32,000 units in the UK between December and next March and today's decision was taken because of "a dramatic change in the global automobile market". The company said there were no plans for redundancies.

The cuts will see the company's UK production fall by 29pc year-on-year to 175,000 units.

The other cuts in production will be in Japan, 40,000, and the US, 18,000. The reduction in output in Japan lowers next year's scheduled production to 1.28m units – 1pc lower than last year.

see now that pisses me right off, theu want 25 billion to sort there poo out!

why the fudge do they deserve the money there a business just like the millins struggling around the globe, they should have better in house financial managment, its shocking to think that goverments will continue to flog these dying horses.

if they can produce cars on the funds they have avaliable good shut them all down, unlucky tough poo, if you didn't charge so much you might have sold more cars, etc etc its mearly the fact they will cause so many job losses.

company should be taken from the manufacturers and sold off with staff included to rival companies, thats the harsh reality of business.

well they all have tonnes of cars sat in car parks waiting to be ordered, what a complete waist of time and money, makes no sense at all, and its not the first or second time car companies cry out, there should be a massive investment in common sense.

i also believe that the owners/share holder the major ones that get the bonuses etc, should when a company goes bust loose there fortunes along with it, that way it'll have more imitence to get the issues sorted when the big wigs are in danger.

Imported Cars should already be sold not just dragged into this country by the thousands with the sellers dreaming of shifting them all.
