every time i drive my car, the front passengerside wheel nuts start coming undone. 2 of them in fact, theyve done it about 6 times since i bought the car- and they come loose, and i mean loose enough to remove by hand in about 3 turns. and when they do, the wheel is banging and clanking like its about to fall off- and its pretty scarey! so i dont fancy driving it again, but i just dont get what could cause my wheel nuts to remove themselves? i did them up with a dirty great big extension bar, by hand and then put a 3 ft bar in the end of the bar to do the bolts up, and they were DAMN tight.

more importantly, anyone got a clue what i can do to fix the said problem? it scared the crap outta me every time now...

btw its a nissan almera, the wheel nuts are all the same and are the right ones which came with the car... Help!

cheers

I dont want to sound silly but are the nuts fitted the right way round, ie shamfered edge to wheel

Have seen this done before

or the tapered end doesnt match the wheel? Im guessing, but i think that angle is probably universal anyway. Check the quality of the mating faces to make sure theyre nice and clean.

Be careful putting a breaker bar on there because you could damage the threads which would be a pain in the arse to sort.

Other than that, borrow a torque wrench, they should be approx 100-110Nm.

Also id keep a bar in the car at all times and check at the beginning and end of every journey until you can trust them again. You dont want them getting that loose because as your aware its pretty dangerous :-S

good luck sourcing the problem, i hate niggly simple things like that, that are seemingly impossible to sort lol.

yeah, theyre the sort which can only go on one way- the end is capped, so the chunk of metal only has one threaded hole which makes them totally idiot proof- which is why im so worried! i dont know why theyd be doing this, ive got them all clean and they look matching and fine. could the hub be damaged? would that make any difference?

its a good point though, and i did check that the bolts were right and fitted- ( i.e if someone prior to my ownership had used the ones from a honda on a nissan for example)

You say the ends of the bolts are capped. Do the nuts actually bite onto the wheels or do they run out of thread and not actually bite down fully?

Just a stab in the dark! :)

hmmm... honestly, im not sure. the wheel is on tight, and the shamfered edge is in to the wheel but it could be possible... my only concern is that by deisgn. all 16 are the same and its only the same reoccuring 2 that come loose..

In that case I'd get those two nuts replaced.
Job sorted. :)

Mark the studs, take the wheel off and check there isnt damage on them, perhaps they are spinning? Its splined (kinda) on the stud which is just pressed into the hub, at least i think thats the case lol.

do what race cars do... drill a small hole in them and tie wire through them linkin 2 bolts together so that when one nut trys 2 come loose it is tightening the other up which stops it happening.

as its been said before either a spinning stud, streached threads on the studs or incorrect seat between nut and wheel.

or very clever squirrels after your shiny nuts!

you could also try putting them two nuts on another wheel and see if it still happens that way you will know if its the nuts or not B)
