I pretty sure i'm correct in saying that, three years after a motoring offence, the points are wiped off your licence. The thing that I don't understand is, insurers always ask you if you've had any convictions in the last five year. If you got one that’s, say, four years old, do you have to tell them? how would they find out if you didn't. Your licence is clean after all?

Oh just for the record, I have been completely honest and declared my three points that happened four years ago. I just ask out of I'm just curiosity.

The DVLA keeps points on computer data base for 5 years although they are only valid for 3 (Minor Speeding and traffic offences)

After the 4th year you can send away your paper lisence to have the points removed from there.

Its all rather messy if you ask me.

Although this is the DVLA rules for most normal speeding offences and accidents (fault and non fault) most insurance companies seem to make up their own rules of how far they look back into your driving history

So for speeding they stay on there for four years, but only count towards 'totting up 12 points' for three.

Speeding convictions are null and void (in the eyes of the law) after 3 years, and you can have them removed from your licence a year after that.

If insurance companies ask you for convictions in the last 5 years you need to tell them, whether they are now 'spent' or not. If you don't, and make a claim it's just another way for them to not pay out.

3 speeding points won't affect your insurance anyway (unless you're really young) and is considered 'normal' for most drivers these days.

ah right thanks for clearing that up. when i went to show the cops my license, i ask the girl how long the points would be on my license for, she said 3 years which is what confused me. i'll keep being honest anyway, as dan said, its not going to cost much if any more.
