I have recently moved from poole to perth in australia, one thing i cantell you bout that is that coming here provides a great opportunity to expand a garage and maintain and run high performance cars. out here no one drives round in pointless 1.2`s or 1 litres, the minimum displacement is at least 1.6 and most people here run v6`s or v8`s, im not a fan of the v8`s but th v6 turbos here are pretty cool and the v8 utes are also a favourite of many people here. these cars are cheap to buy as they come from japan or are all made within australia itself. running a car here is a hell of a lot cheaper too! im paying what 70p a litre if that? and thats the reason no one runs small engined cars here, theres no point! other indirect costs such as tax and insurance are also more pleasing to the motorists. tax comes in at around $400 or 190quid but that provides you with thrid party insurance, which is good for someone like me, at 18 years old insuring an EVO. they are more switched on here to providing the motorist with support financially and so driving here is a different matter altogether. if you want to have fun driving, australia sure offers that! |

or maybe its because in the uk you cant be trusted with an evo at 18 because you'll kill somebody or kill yourself in it. so good for you

in the uk though noone considers insuring someone under 21 evo on a saxo vts? well you can but is it worth the price? its nice to av something quiker nd nicer for a tenth of the insurance price another thing to mention is that in the uk u dont have to drive whereas over here you do. |

you can get insured on a saxo at any age because they are crap cars <_< or did you not understand that lol. end of the day our insurance system might be crap but its that way for a reason, if so many people didnt crash cars like evo's because they can't handle them then they would be cheaper to drive, maybe you've been in the sun abit too long chewing tobacco that you can't think logically. sorry but what car did you drive before the evo? and why do you think most people wait until they have been driving a few years to get one, because not only can they afford one but they have some EXPERIENCE in driving, which counts for alot. any rich boy could go and buy one over here but look how quickly they crash it, so maybe think before you put up silly posts in future. good on you that your in australia and have an evo at 18, atleast we dont have to see you when you've crashed it over here and take out somebody we know. |

what i mean is that in the uk everything is relativly short distances for example you can reach a post office or supermarket in a close vicinity eg 5 km or so, u dont need to drive ther, and if yiou didnt have a car that distance would be easier to cover via public transport or exercise, in oz however your not dealing with 5 kms youre looking at 25kms. distances here a more vast due to the size of the country and public transport is not quite as up to date as it is in the uk, trust me public transport is nightmare here! and so driving here is encouraged. |

thing is here though driving culture is different, everyone here doesnt race around showing off as they do in the uk, aka people ragging it around in their 1.6`etc, people kno that they have the power here so everywhere is not a race track, youre brought up to drive safe here so you cant compare driving here with there! death on the roads here is much less than the uk, or have u been in the cold too long to kno the facts? i just love the fact i can drive round in teh sun when its mid winter? and i dont reli miss driving in the uk at all tbh. |

probably because you have open roads which people dont walk on because they dont want to die in the desserts........ and the driving culture might be difference because you dont have stupid cars like saxos or corsas etc for people to think they are fast. and how you say 'your brought up to drive safe here' is funny since you've just moved there, sounding like a native already, got the barby on the go yet mate? |

i also cant understand how someone could argue that low insurance premiums, tax and low petrol costs seems to be a bad thing? i cant agree that the uk insurance system is good because it is a rip off, when someone bought a fiesta for 900quid and then pays 2000quid insurance on it there is something wrong. |

been to oz for a couple weeks a few year ago and i have too say that when i was there, the ozzys driving abilitys are pi$$ poor, we was there 2 days and travelling into adelaide there was an accident right in front of us and while travelling down to melbourne from adelaide, on the side of the road there was different coloured stakes to represent a road traffic incident or a fatailty, yeah driving there is as safe as houses

i hear what you are sayin but from my experience here having drivin here many times feels differnt, i dont feel intimidated here and because its more open theres more margin for error the system for learning is not as good as in the uk but the overall approach is more laid back? |

and i thought i might add that to obtain a licence here you must go through a longer learning period than in the uk, u pas youire test then u must be on L plates for 6 months even though you have passed youre test. overall it doesnt create better drivers however but thats not the point im trying to make, im not saying they are better drivers im just saying the driver atmosphere is different. |

lol.... I agree with you Andy, Insurance is high for a reason. However i work in insurance, and i can tell you the following When a young person crashes, it is a bad crash, usually due to the speed, which has a high cost. However, the elderly consistently crash in car parks, hit parked cars, go into the back of people. It is absolutely insane the number of claims some people have. However, the cost of the claim is usually less. Someone yesterday had an elderly driver "lose control" of his automatic, and hit 4, yes 4 parked cars, before he could press the brake in time..... People are dangerous in different ways. But yes evo at 18 i give you 6 months |

well that was the best post ive read for a long time , & i must say Andy is spot on. you wont have the experience at 18 years. i dont agree with sky high insurance but its the idiots without ANY that annoys me. ive had to wait long time to afford my RA. :

......So you're saying that age is the pure factor involved with judging situation and driving ability? Im fully insured on my car, Does my age mean that its irresponsible that I drive the car? |

wot im saying is that at 18 years of age you dont have the experience & road kraft that an older person has. i know i didnt. at the end of the day though some insurance is better than none! |

I spent two weeks driving in Perth back in April this year. What an eyeopener. Everyone drives exactly on the speed limit, even on a 3 lane highway. The only exceptions are those older folk who drive even slower than they do over here. I drove a couple of long distance (two hour plus) drives and can honestly say I have never been so bored in my life. While the bus service may be dreadful, you've got to admit that train system they've built is damn good. ![]() We were out in Butler to the north and just drove to the nearest station and hopped on to get into the city. Hated the housing estates there though. Every one the same and nothing to do. |
