Well my Turbo gaskets have gone (second time in two years). While I've got it all apart I'm gonna swap out the 100k+ T28.

Now I hate lag, its the only thing that pisses me off about the way my 200 drives. So do I

A) Settle for my current 300bhp and opt for a GT28R (same turbo, faster spool, great value at the mo)
B.) Get my T28 reconditioned, a 360degree thrust bearing fitted and possibly fitted with hybrid internals?
C) Fit a GT28RS, decent spool up and capable of another 20-50bhp
D) Fit a GT2871R, more lag than I have now (cheaper than a GT28RS????), but capable of 380-400bhp.

The whole experience is gonna cripple me financially no matter which way I go

I'm going to be fitting a new turbo elbow, tubby jacket and wrapping everything to keep engine bay temps down.

28R

the RS seems to have had a few failures on SXOC, and you would have to upgrade to stage 3 to make the most of it. Same for the 2871 - 3a.

I had the 28R and I got 1.2bar of boost at 3000rpm. It spools up a whole lot quicker than the standard bushed version.

I had the same choice not so long ago , And the only reason i didnt get the 28r was the failure rate , And have you ever done something by halfs and regreted it at a later date , Stage 3A all the way you wont regret it !! :D

Thats they way I'm leaning, they are £475 at the mo!!!!

Going to heat wrap EVERYTHING to try and get the spool time down further.

I did think about going for a slightly smaller FMIC as mine seems a bit overkill.

28R's don't seem to fail much, its the RS' that go.

I'm worried about the extra lag on the 2871R and that fact they like to fall off the manifold

If i have mine in time for the meet in a few weeks ill take you out in it , You can decided on lag , But tbh i cant tell the difference between 3a and 2 on lag terms , The only problem is price for stage 3a , You need z32 Afm , Map and braided lines(if you havnt got them already) , Also you start to enter gearbox killing zone

Yer I'm not really interested in loads more power, a bit more would be nice. I don't want to be rebuilding engines, destroying gearboxes etc...it justs takes the fun out of owning the car. I want a useable car where the power can be on tap as early in the rev range as possible. All or nothing power can be very frustrating.

I'll take you up on that ride, what sort of RPM are you getting full boost?

I can understand that , the luck me and mark have been having since the upgrade has made it differcult to say the least , Tbh i cant remember full boost rpm , Havent driven it in almost a month  , Need to buy some new wheels ,
+ When it hits full boost its a struggle to look at the boost guage , Too busy trying to avoid all the scooby's in my way :P

Lol, I think the 2871r is a bit too big for what I'm looking to do with the car.

On combe i wasnt having any lag issues , Use the gears just right and you never go slow enough to be that low in RPM , The only problem i had was my brakes where shocking

Lag isn't really an issue on the track as you've always up in rpm range, but for road use I depise putting my foot down in second and waiting for boost to come in, while some crappy golf tdi pulls away in a cloud of black smoke (closely followed by me leaving them in a cloud of white smoke lol)

Also my dad managed to make a brace for the exhuast which has stopped the nuts going loose for a solid 3 months now , And they are still locked on , So if anyone is having that issue , Have a look at mine , Its well worth copying

Use two nuts on each stud and/or spot weld them on. Easy to grind off the spot weld if you need to disassemble in the future.

Have you thought of a charge cooler or water injection ?

Jez Horsham had a homebuilt WI system that worked pretty well (most of the time).

Looked into both, charge cooling works out very expensive as it'll be a custom job, WI is a bit of a bodge (unless is a rotary).

I do like the idea of a charge cooler and really short pipe work.

i'd stick with the FMIC and get a GT28r.
[GK-customfield]Lewis[customfield-GK]
Starlet GT 1.3 forged engine, tdo4 turbo @ 1.25bar = 252bhp = SOLD :(

EDIT: Charade GTxx 993cc three cylinder turbo, 173bhp @ 1.4bar (should hit 200bhp with a larger throttle body, removing stupid high lift cams and a bit more boost)
