So the difference between 10-20db is not equal in value to the difference between 50-60db. Its also a measurement of pressure, which is why mines low as there is just less gas coming out due to smaller capacity, so yeah, something learnt for the day, unless im wrong, in which case teach me something for the day

MaccyD i think capacity has little to do with it, i could be wrong but compare 2 petrol engined cars of the same size, 1 is turbo, 1 is NA, give them a similar spec exhaust system and you will find the NA is always louder because the ambient noise of the internals is the source of the noise. it relates to what i found out a month or so ago that the americans under law class a turbocharger as 'an exhaust muffler' because of its position it reduces the ambient noise of the engine passing through the exhaust system. look at the list of who i have tested so far and if you notice me and john are at the top, and our cars are NA along with hellraisers, mine being 1.6 and johns being 1.8. hellraisers as far as i'm aware only has 2 back boxes welded on the end so all the silencers and cat converters are still in place, remove those and he will be alot louder. another comparison could be the mazda rx7, the NA versions are louder than the turbo versions yet they have the same engines.

Yeah, i just mean capacity in comparison with same types of induction. My friends pulsar has similar sized exhaust but is about 10db higher, due to moving much more air, as i say im sure its a measure of pressure. And yeah a turbo is effectively a baffle particularly when doing a noise test, if you could test it under load on a dyno for example so you could get the turbo spinning up the results would be spread much didderently i think. |
