We've just aquired a Recon 4 speed Gearbox for the Micra.
As well as the gears being difficult to select it also jumps out of 3rd gear and sometimes 2nd which is dangerous as hell. several times it jumped out of gear when i was doing a manouvere and ended up a bit flustered to say the least!
We had a new Clutch and Cable fitted and i have to say that it doesn't seem to be smooth like the other Micra, the bite point is about 1-2" from the floor, the car also judders when moving off from a standstill.

Anybody got any clues as to whats going on?

cheers peeps

I cant remember if the gear selector is adjustable or if its pinned so only goes on one way, thats what I would check first.

Also check the gearbox oil level some Micra's dont have a level plug you have to check by removing the speedo cable if the oil covers the drive bit its ok. These usually have a sticker where the cable goes telling you how to check.

As for a judder that is usually a clutch/flywheel thing unless the gearbox mounting is loose

:)

cheers guys

I'll have a look at the Bushes on the control arm as first contact. The Gear selector is non adjustable, Oils ok for level, will check Mounts and i think that the judder 'might' be us getting used to the new Clutch, maybe it will loosen up a bit when worn slightly?

The new cable has been adjusted halfway even though it's a new one. :(
One thing i did notice is how easy it is to take it out of every Gear whilst on the move, i thought it was supposed to be quite difficult to do this?

The Garage i usually go to is pretty competent in all aspects of Mechanics so i can't really doubt his ability at this point, although i'm beginning to think that this might turn into an expensive affair for the Gearbox supplier.....

Sorry Argie did not think it was a new clutch, it will bed in after a while but it should not judder. The drive take up may be a bit harsh to start with.

Some cars will quite happily go up and down the gears without using the clutch but these were older less complicated things like my old Ford Mexico

If you can drop off at my work next week I can take it for a drive and let you know what I think. ;)

Was it a new clutch or reconditioned?
