i belive i have a noisey tappet on my classic. other than spend loads more dosh and time does anyone know of any oil treatments designed for dampening noisey tappets? i have been told this is a common thing with the early scoobys and it will cause no harm apart from irritate me and also would a 10/40 oil be the best to use? |

try and get hold of "Forte motor flush" add it to your oil and run the engine for about 10 mins, give it a few bursts of revs before you switch off. Drain oil and i would say use a 10/60w oil as thats what triton reccomend, should dampen the noise

oh i didnt really want to use a flush as i have tried a tappet cleaning treatment which did naff all, but my motor is very clean as the oil is changed every 4k and never really gets dirty. i used an engine flush in my last car and it made it sound like a bag of nuts & bolts so im a tad worried about doing that on my beloved scooby

i have heard forte stuff is about the best gear. do they do a top end treatment? or what about slick 50 with the new oil,do you think that may make things a little smoother and less rattley. |

You 100% it's a tappet? Does it go away when you rev it? |

when engine is cold it dont make tapping noise, when engine is hot it taps if i gently rev anything above 1500rpm it stops tapping. also if i thrash the shit out of it for a mile or 2 and then let it idle it sounds a little more rattley. |

Neomagic its a common fault on early EJ engines, Especially the legacy ones because they had a different design lifter arrangment

neomagic im 99% sure its a tappet, apart from this noise the motor is sweet and definatly NOT cranky.....i bought some castrol magnatec and a forte engine flush this evening so tomorrow im gonna see if i can make it any quieter. i know its got 0w 30 mobil 1 in at the moment which is like piss and probably wont help much. |

ok,well this morning i decided not to use an engine flush as what would be the point?my engine internals are clean and even when the oil is old its barely dirty so what would be the point of flushing?none. So i drained the old oil and filled up with some 10/40 magnatec amd a forte top end treatment, seems to have done the trick as the tap, tap, tap noise has gone now and all i get is the normal top end noise and the injectors working away. so all is well again and sounding sweet again.
