Gearbox/driveshaft Gone; Differences?

Question for all you people out there

without looking, or being able to see whats gone, how can you tell the difference between a gearbox going on you, and a driveshaft?

Main reason im asking is im a bit confused, I havent been able to see whats gone wrong with my car, ive automatically thought gearbox aswell as the recovery guy the other day

but im getting told 2 different things now

Right, here are the symptoms:
No drive
No speedo (Got towed along motorway and speedo wouldnt go above 10mph)
I can rev the car and the speedo goes up like a rev counter
I can start the car in gear and it starts as is in neutral, even in reverse
no sounds like the clicking you get when putting into reverse
clutch feels fine, and selector is moving

right, I thought gearbox, but others are saying that it could be the driveshaft, but I cant see that as if it were the driveshaft I thought I would of had atleast some attempt from the car to move, and I didnt think you could start a car in gear even with a broken shaft as it would try to stall, but it starts as if its not in gear

Any info would be of great help as I dont want to order parts if its not the gearbox thats gone

I will be looking at the car tonight to see if I can work out more, as I have untill tomorrow to order the part to get it here before the weekend, but I want to be sure that its not the shaft, but I cant get over the thought that its the box thats died on me

cheers all

it could be either inner cv joint or outer cv joint you need to jack up and have it running in gear to see it could even be a hub fault hope this helps :)

could be clutch burnt out, had it been slipping up to when you broke down? or smelly?
if not clutch, and the speedo dont work, then its sounds like the box,
scrap it n start again, my primera felt like a micra...crap

not if it were the inner, and if it were the outer then it could of been picked up on the MOT

Cant do the rex as I still need a car with rear seats due to having 2 kids

Driveshaft splines have worn down or broken off...or maybe a little biddy circlip has bust

If it was an Automatic i would've said the Torque converter

someone I know who knows a decent bit about primeras said the same as its VERY rare for the gearbox to go on these as they have strong boxes on them, and he said it could be the circlip or inner CV has gone

so after work im going to investigate more...im hoping its simple like this as it will be cheaper to repair and alot easier!!!

well well well, arent we the smart arse lol!!!

I had another look when I got home and found out that the outer cv circlip has gone....turns out it was an easier fix than I thought

shows what the AA know dont it lol!

All I did was jiggle the driveshaft and the car now moves forward and back!

thanks everyone for the help, much appreciated
