There has been some posts on non conforming number plates recently so I thought would try to clear up a few questions by posting the Method Of Inspection and Reasons For Rejection section of the Testers guide.

This is the up to date info that we use to test number plates.

There is also a special notice on the last picture dated 10 - 2007 This suspends certain checks for the time being but will be replaced by new requirements shortly

Our cars fall into the class 4 (IV) sections

I cant get a digital file off the Vosa computer so have had to print and scan

Hope you find this useful :)

Manny I read this on another forum recently... any ideas if its true?

MOT number plate rules suspended

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The recent changes to to MOT rules on number plates has been suspended meaning testers cannot fail a car on.

The registration plate back ground overprinted with text e.g. vehicle manufacturer name.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A front plate does not have black characters on a white background
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A rear plate does not have black characters on a yellow background
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A reg plate not showing the name and postcode of the supplying outlet
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Plate not showing a BSAU 145d marking
--------------------------------------
A plate showing a honeycomb or similar background
-----------------------------------------------------
A plate with a non reflective boarder obviously wider than permitted or too close to the characters
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A dual purpose plate displaying a symbol other than an acceptable symbol or flag.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new rules will continue once cleared, so for now the car cannot be failed on the above points

This was reported in a Professional Trade Magazine

Reasoning behind it..

Basically before a law can be passed as enforceable you must follow the appropriate procedures and some IDIOT at the government or DVLA to be precise forgot to do this.
Its a technical oversight which they are trying to remedy a the moment but it takes time.

Ooh, but are there one set of rules for the police and one for the MOT testers?

In theory it should be the same as we can only test what is laid down in the testers guide and pass or fail accordingly in the relevent sections.

We issue a pass stating that the car is in a roadworthy condition and conforms to regulation, I cant see the police arguing with our decision unless we have got it wrong.

surely the MOT/DVLA sets the standard, and the police just reinforce it? if that wasn't the case then the MOT would be dictated by what the police deem acceptable on the roads, which lets face it would be alot different to the current MOT system.

The MOT is based on the Road Traffic Act and its various versions over the years, in effect its the LAW covering motor vehicles in the UK

The confusion sometimes comes about when non traffic trained police try to check things like tyres and number plates without actually knowing the regulations or having, for example, a tyre depth gauge to accuratly measure the central three quarters of the tread to a minimum limit of 1.6mm, looking at it and shaking your head while writing out a penalty notice is not the way to do it

Looks like a square number plate to me

As long as the font and spacing is correct and is illuminated correctly there is no reason to get pulled for a square plate :)
