Big Brother in the UK just got a little more paranoid. A new generation of cameras has been implemented in England to catch motorists who abuse carpool lanes. The cameras contain technology that can sense the amount of bodily fluid inside a vehicle – to detect how any people are inside.

The cameras work by sending an infrared signal through the oncoming car’s windshield detecting the blood and water consistent in the human body. The system’s developer believe that the cameras will seek out the motorists who try to trick the existing cameras by placing mannequins in the car or place pictures on the windshield. Yes, they do that.

Its first implementation is in the police car-sharing lanes in Leeds, but other areas have shown an interest in the device, according to the Daily Mail.

Professor John Tyrer, who headed the Loughborough University team which created the device, said it would reduce congestion. He said, “It allows you to automatically count people. That pools through to the congestion charging, so they can charge differently or reduce the rates dramatically if you’ve got more people in the cars.”

But, of course, others feel that the new cameras are a further intrusion on privacy and say that carpooling lanes don’t work. AA president Edmund King said, “Car-sharing lanes are incredibly difficult to enforce and, if not many people use them, they’re actually a waste of road capacity.”

I thought infra red cameras detected heat, not fluid ?

:wtf:

A system for determining the concentration of an analyte in at least one body fluid in body tissue, the system comprising an infrared light source, a body tissue interface, a detector, and a central processing unit. The body tissue interface is adapted to contact body tissue and to deliver light from the infrared light source to the contacted body tissue. The detector is adapted to receive spectral information corresponding to infrared light transmitted through the portion of body tissue being analyzed and to convert the received spectral information into an electrical signal indicative of the received spectral information. The central processing unit is adapted to compare the electrical signal to an algorithm built upon correlation with the analyte in body fluid, the algorithm adapted to convert the received spectral information into the concentration of the analyte in at least one body fluid.

Shamelessly ripped from Google.

Carpool is just an American term for car sharing. :)
