The easiest way is to remove the gearbox is from under the car book time is something like 7 hours for a clutch change, bear in mind thats having it up on a lift

You could take the engine out but dont see the point much more complicated way of doing it

I have seen on American forums some people have removed the radiator and a few other bits and lifted the engine off its mountings and pulled it forward just enough to clear the clutch and do it that way  I personaly would not do it like that.

Doing it on the floor lifted up on stands is possible the sequence is:

Intercooler (to gain access to top bellhousing bolts and slave cylinder and clutch fork)

Exhaust up to the turbo

Propshaft

Both front drive shafts

Speedo cable / sensor wire

Reverse wire

Gear selector

Gearbox mounting

Remaining bellhousing bolts and starter motor

The clutch fork has to be removed it looks complicated but there is a hole that allows you to seperate the fork from the bearing

The box is heavy, dont try on your own get help and a jack of some kind.

Would pay to get quotes from the vendors section if you dont fancy it.

Good luck with your clutch one point to remember is that the front wheels have to be hanging and off to get the front drive shafts out if you are going to remove the ball joints this cant be done on a low level drive up ramp.

Forgot to mention that the drive shafts have roll pins holding them to the output shafts on the gearbox remove them carefully with a small drift would pay to get some new ones and make sure the holes are lined up when putting them back in

I would think so just same diameter and length the shafts are splined so the pins are not under that much strain

I personally take the engine out almost as quick as taking the box out but much easer to do. Works out quicker in the end if there is any think else to be done to the engine i.e. plugs, belt etc :2p:
