after i thought id finished spending on the car and been very happy with it......i realised id thought wrong! found myself looking at fmic just to finish the job off,i was also looking for feedback on>>>do they make a noticable difference in performance over the standard little top mount. do the later classic fmic kits fit the early classic? and are the cheaper kits as effective as the ridiculously expensive kits? kitsfor the early classic do not seem to be as available as they are for the later model. |

Lower charge temps giving the ability to run more boost (along with associated mods). You'll get a bit more lag (hence why most people get a remappable ecu as well) The late model kits fit early classics but need a few mods to the car to get them to fit. Autobahn 88 kits off flat4online (£350) seem very popular but the APS and Blitz ones are meant to be the best (although you pay through the nose for them). IMO don't see the point of them unless you're going to be running more than 1.2bar boost or large power (330+). Speak to Jay as he fitted a fmic himself to his old classic or LegacyTurbo seems quite handy at fitting them. |

ok. so as my car is not 300bhp would a better top mount off an sti be an improvement on my standard ic? also its automatic so the less lag the better so maybe a fmic wouldnt be such a good idea if thats the case. |

I think its been said before the Type 25 Impreza runs the standard STI top mount @415 BHP For ease I would go for a larger top mount a lot less work than cutting bits out of the car, I know its been done by a few but looks like hard work to me

yes it will, gave me approx 20-30 more bhp over my stock chargecooler setup on the leggy. mine only cos about £180 delivered as i got it from Bren at apex on a group buy, only reason i bought it! i would put the money towards a manual gearbox  hehe only messing

A larger tmic (Late UK or STI5/6) can be made to fit (dump valve hole is on the rhs instead of the left so it need to be blanked off and tbh it's 'easier' to fit a fmic as some of the reservoirs may have to be moved and brackets made. my mate has a late model tmic i'll see if i can get some piccies. the fmic may make the car run lean (and then you have to spend money on sorting that out) whereas the tmic won't. a late model tmic is good for 300bhp (as this is what the late model STIs run) |

IMO a FMIC is a worth while upgrade on the early scoob running the small slanty intercooler plus they give the engine bay alittle bling. Up until recently you could only buy a kit designed for the 96-on models so some panel cutting and a hole in the inner wing was needed to make it fit. Hybrid now sell a specific kit for the 93-96 models so i guess it will be a straight fit. Fitting is not as bad as made out i think it took me about 14 hours in total fitting it on my own and TBH i never noticed any difference in lag either, well not enough to talk about. |

your right on it there boss...my front bumper is gaggin for a fm thats what a scooby bumper was made for but on the other hand smoothness and reliability are equally important as a few extra ponies so im stuck on the dessision between tm or fm. ill look at hybrid if i can find as thats what puts me off fm having to cleaver lumps of steel off my car. |

You don't have to fit through the inner wing (always seemed a bit silly to me as that's where the airflow comes in for the induction kit). You can make a hole in the horizontal panel behind the drivers headlight which shortened the length of the pipe considerably and on the other side running it to the side of the engine rasther then over it. Speak to Triton as the fitted a fmic to a rather nice blue impreza they were working on which had very short pipework compared to the standar fmic fitting (the impreza is running upto 500bhp) |

There was a test done lastyear by a jap magazine in which they tested 3 different intercoolers...the original top mount an uprated top mount and a Front mount. The Front mount won hands down and the least effective was the uprated top mount. Fitting a later model top mount is not that straight forward...firstly you need someone who can weld alloy, you need all intercooler brackets, brake reservoir needs modifying and due to the intercoolers bigger size it will hit on the bulkhead so the neck of the intercooler also needs cutting. |
