A Dorset teenager killed himself and a friend while "showing off" in his new car, a coroner said. Matthew Lee Russell, 18, of Taymar Road, near Ferndown, died when he drove his Hyundai Accent round a bend in Wimborne at 70mph on 3 October 2007. The inquest in Bournemouth heard Mr Russell, who held a provisional licence and had never taken driving lessons, lost control and crashed into a tree. His passenger Simon Lord, 39, of Poole Road, Wimborne, was killed instantly. The car burst into flames when it crashed, ending up upside down along a country road. He wanted to see how fast he could go round this particular corner Coroner Sheriff Payne Mr Lord's partner, Mary Jane Smith, 25, was also in the car, but she managed to smash a window in the car and escape. The friends had been drinking at a pub earlier that day but Mr Russell had not exceeded the legal limit, the inquest was told. Miss Smith told the inquest they had driven to Boscombe and were returning to Wimborne. In a statement, she said: "I remember seeing 70mph on the speedo. "I recall hitting something hard, banging my head and seeing flames." She suffered two broken ribs, a broken nose, head injuries, cuts and bruises. The two men died from massive blunt force trauma. Coroner Sheriff Payne recorded a verdict of death as a result of a collision on the road for both men. He said the teenager had somehow "acquired the car" and was "certainly showing it off on the day of this incident". "They drove past the scene and Matthew said he wanted to see how fast he could go round this particular corner and actually turned round in a lay-by and went back," said Mr Payne. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorset/7218870.stm The last paragraph sums up the mentality of alot of people in this country. |

No offence intended to anyone but it serves the driver right for driving like a bell end when he shouldn't of even been behind the wheel.... just such a shame the other guy had to lose his life too. |

Im sorry but driving like a dick doesnt deserve a death penalty..!! Everyone has driven like a dick sometime in their driving life and anyone who tells me different i would call a liar....Did the passenger deserve to die?? and in all honestly did the driver?. Im not going to preach about the rights and wrongs of driving but time after time i read posts on car forums from people flaming others for their driving when in reality they have done exactly the same at some point. |

Total waste of life If they suffered Blunt force trauma does that mean neither of them were wearing Seatbelts? If they wern't they were both asking for something to happen and lo and behold...cause and effect rears it's ugly head once more. I think the problem with some of the younger Drivers is that they don't seem to know where and when to do certain things with cars or in fact any vehicle.....it's very complicated isn't it?...you have to know where to draw the line in some situations, basically you have to shit yourself in order for you to know where you stand at that particular point.....you cross the line and maybe you die, simple as that. Just to add, i noticed that the passengers were 39 and 25 yrs old. Shouldn't they have known any better than to get into an unlicenced car? the mind boggles

Perhaps not Jay but he wasn't liecenced to drive the car or any car for that matter and the article states he 'aquired' the car.... interesting use of words don't you think?? So if he had stolen your car and wrecked it you wouldn't have a death wish on his head?? Maybe my initial post sounds harsh and I do feel huge pity for the guys familiy and friends at their tragic loss but at the end of the day the driver had had a beer, was driving a car which may of been stolen, possibly wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was likely driving way over the speed limit at the time of the accident. Just my 2p.

As Rob said death is harsh, and the other 2 are fools getting in the car. But what if this lad had killed someone? Saw it today, a new AstraVXR or look a like was hitting around 60 on the road linking wallisdown and Bmth Uni, what a cock, I was thinking ive driven high power cars for years an never done that in a 30. I pulled alongside, (ironically) and he looked about 17! I have to admit, I hope he hits a tree. But only destroys the car. |

I have to agree with what you have said there. Everyone makes mistakes, and sometimes the over enthusiatic actions or stupidity unfortunatley ends up with this result. I think to deserve to die is slightly extreme, when the majority of us have pushed the limits at times and gotten away with it. However I do think doing things like this with people in the car is stupid anyway. It is just a shame that families now have to suffer the loss of a loved one due to 5 minutes of fame... |
