Elderly motorists in the UK may, in the future, be submitted to an IQ test to maintain their driving privileges according to PistonHeads.

The tests are aimed at weeding out the aging-motorists not mentally capable of navigating through the dangers of driving. It’s reported that the drivers will not have to retake a driving exam, but will be required to an eye exam as well as the IQ testing.

Officials will require anyone over the age of 75 to take, and retake, the exam every five years. While groups have favored these changes for several years, other groups representing the elderly have said these types of tests stereotype the elderly as poor drivers.

Do you welcome new required testing for the elderly?

is their iq a problem really? surely its more their slower reactions etc that are the problem? when i worked in a petrol station the amount of elderly people that drove in and then took ten minutes walking from the car to the till to pay was unbelievable. if they can barely walk how can they be safe to drive? they eye sight needs to be checked though, and also their height! the amount of old ppl that can look through the steering wheel rather than over it!

As dizzy said IQ isn't a problem look how many idiots are on the road.
IQ is ameasure of intelligence not common sense.

The height issue is a bit crap imo the amount of women (mainly) who do the looking through the steering wheel or have the seat pushed so far upto the steering wheel is quite high imo (living near a school you get to see many bad habits from school run drivers).

Loopy, look at the amount of dangerous young drivers on the road.

As long as it stops old women reversing at top speed out of lloyds bank car park in poole, causing bedlam for everyone else as we screech to avoid her and then we watch as she pootles off oblivious, i'll be happy.
Lol, rant over. There are plenty of young drivers who cause accidents too.

I'm not sure an IQ test is quite the right thing for the elderly as it's a bit demeaning to them apart from anything but I do thing a 2 yearly 'mini-test' of their driving abilities beyond the age of 60 years old would help. :)

hazard perecption test that they use already, theory test on todays road signs and traffic laws seems more appropriate and its already in place to be tested. plus like robs says, a brief driving test to ensure safe operation the vehicle...

its unfair to stereotype all old people.

not all old people are bad drivers. but all bad drivers are OLD

I didnt read the post properly

I thought it said driving test, not IQ test, I dont see any reason why the elderly should have an IQ test, but they should certainly have a driving exam of some discription, specially to text they reflex'es and response times, as well as their eye sight. We have an old guy that comes in my shop that can barely walk, barely see and barely hear, yet he still drives

Myblackwrx, I hear what your saying about dangerous young people on the road, but they did have to pass a test, where as some old people have never done that!

I am all for a 3 or 5 year compulsory re-test for EVERYONE !

As well as keeping driving instructors in a job, it would rid the roads of the majority of poor drivers, or at least encourage them to take further instruction to improve their skills.

I think you'll find its not so much an Iq test but a test to see if your brain can work within a decent time period. Theres a lady down our road who literally drove into a parked lorry. Dumbass!

When I get that old i'll put my hands up and take the retest. If im not capable of driving safely then tough shit for me!

What ive found since driving is that you tend to see the older generation turning on junctions etc at the wrong time because their reaction speed has dropped through age!

I was was in Tesco's a little while ago queuing for petrol. In the other lane a little old women was sat waiting for a car to move so she could get to the pump. Instead of moving forward to the first pump so the car behind could slot in behind her she got out and started to fill up leaving the first pump free.

When i went to pay she was ahead of me at the till. She told the cashier it was pump number 2 and it was £10. The guy looked at her and said its not £10 its 10p...

I think you'd need a retest at that age simply because of how much vehicles/roads have changed since your test.
But things like ABS, power steering and motorways have all been added in the last 30 years, a re-familiarisation would be good.

My mum can't figure out why the rear wiper comes on when you reverse in the rain in her new ford fusion, bless.

u may have a ig of 200 but if it takes you 1- secs to move your foot off the gas to applythe break to avoid a incident it aint much good.....
its the old nackered joints i blame...how many old people ride the clutch in thier rover???its not cos they cant drive just the joints wont allow their leg to move enuf to let it rite out......bring on more mini busese for the elderly, keep em out of cars....the majority anyways..

ABOVE MAY BE MY OPION, I DO NOT INTEND TO OFFEND, BUT PLEASE DONT TELL ME IM WRONG, ITS MY OPINION, YOU ALSO HAVE ONE....

It's the elderly driver + flat cap + blanket/panama hat on parcel shelf combination that should set alarm bells ringing!

The bit that gets me is that some elderly drivers struggle to navigate turnings off the carriage way, slowing almost to a standstill whilst ascertaining whether their Micra/Fiesta etc will make the turn that a 40 tonne truck could make sideways.

I think some form of driving ability test for the elderly would be beneficial to everyone.
