Surely as decatting a car is illigal, any decat cannot be insured. Doesnt this give an insurance company the right to invalidate your insurance in the event of an accident?

So are they worth the risk? Your thoughts please :)

My insurance company knows i've decatted my (93wrx so it's not illegal for me) so they can't invalidate my insurance (but i'm sure they would give it a go :) )

But a sports cat will give similar results and should meet the emissions come MOT time..

I had a decat on my car when I bought it but had to put a cat on to get it through its MOT. After hearing all the roomers about how much extra power you get with a decat, I expected the car to act more sluggish but TBH I couldn't tell the difference.

I had a look at the CAT when it arrived and was surprised to find that I could see straight through it. I expected it to be stuffed with filters but it consisted of little more than a few thin wire grids. Really couldn't see how it could restrict air flow to the point where you’d notice the difference.

I think many years ago, when CAT started to be introduced, you could get large power gains by boring them out but nowerdays CATs have advanced to the point that they barely make a difference.

So, in short, personally i'd stick with a CAT mate.

the wire mesh cats dont cause that much of a restriction, its the ceramic honey combe type that are the worst.

De-cats do make a difference...i noticed the difference straight away, the turbo spooled up quicker down the rev range.

If its the legality side of things that bother you then pay the extra money and buy a 100cell sports cat.

Decats aren't illegal providing your car meets the emissions level without one.

declare the decat to an insurance company and they cant really do anything, some cars make the emissions level even with a decat on so they cant ban them. my old car actually made less emissions with a decat fitted than with the cat :S work that one out.
i tried a sports cat on the civic, felt the same as the decat did, faster acceleration and less slugish but did naff all for emissions, was exactly the same.

declare with insurance and really if you had a crash what could happen? they wont exactly test the emissions if everything is as you declared it.
