right sorry this is so i can let off steam a bit. in 2006 i had a 60k service done on my car as a piece of mind exercise as i didn't want my timing belt to break as it would take out all 24 valves!! (engine fubar!)

all this work cost me £480 whiched should have included all of these parts...

- Timing Belt
- Water Hoses (Quantity 2)
- Crankshaft Sprocket Plate
- Water Pump & Water Pump Gasket
- Camshaft O-Ring Seals (Quantity 2)
- Camshaft Oil Seals (Quantity 4)
- Tensioner Springs (Quantity 2)
- Timing Belt Tensioner
- idler bearings (Quantity 2)
- Thermostat

well after driving about during Christmas i noticed in the mornings especially the car was getting quite ticky! this became worse and ended up all the time on the car.

fearing the worse i took it off the road so i could have time to investigate!

things that were going through my head:

sticking or stuck hydraulic lifter(s)
worst fear rod knock!

couldn't be anything to do with the timing belt cos i have had it all done 1.5 years ago and should last another 60k

anyway taking one timing belt cover off (the only one you can without stripping half of the front of the car! ) i found a bit of slop in the belt, this worried me as i was sure it shouldn't have been that loose. i started up the car with that cover off and the belt was vibrating like mad and a very similar noise was emanating from the belt area.

this let me to believe i was getting belt slap on the casing which was the noise i was hearing (hoping with all my might)

6 hours later and half the front of my engine missing i have found that the hydraulic tensioner which was supposed to have been replaced on the service was either my old original one or another second hand one had completely failed causing the tensioner to be completely closed which means no tension was being exerted on the belt from it!!! :wallbang: i can pull half the width of the belt over the edge of the idler roller.

im furious as i know the tensioners are £200 on there own! this guy has taken my money replaced the timing belt and 2 idlers and pocketed the money for the tensioner!!

i now don't know if the cam seals have been done as requested or the crank seal!!

don't know what to do about it as the guy who serviced my car no longer runs the company and has moved up north. im gutted.

just spent out another £250 on parts from the us and im going to do the damn job myself.............

anybody timed a quad cam engine before LOL

That is bad news :(

Its lucky you found it when you did there was a chance of the belt jumping and the rest you know

I can print you off cambelt fitting instructions from autodata if your car is in there that will help you align the cams up and how to set it all up

You can get universal cam locking tools but you will need two I have one at work, they can be adjusted to fit different cams

Whats the details of your car?

im quite fortunate as there is a comprehensive guide on the internet of changing the belt

Ouch, thats just plain irritating especially with a quad cam, I had to do the cam timing on my V6 camry, its very similar to yours, except the engine is transverse so you cant see anything  3rd time lucky :yay:

That is very bad Gaz.

If you can remeber the guys name you should name & shame IMO.

When you pay good money to have work done and put your trust in someone to carry it out and get this result it is unforgivable IMO.
