If you've been going quite fast, like in 5th gear and start to slow down, is it perfectly acceptable (if your going slow enough) to go from 5th to say 2nd, instead of going 5th-4th-3rd-2nd???

Does it in anyway damage the gearbox?

Starlet GT 1.3 forged engine, tdo4 turbo @ 1.25bar = 252bhp = SOLD :(

EDIT: Charade GTxx 993cc three cylinder turbo, 173bhp @ 1.4bar (should hit 200bhp with a larger throttle body, removing stupid high lift cams and a bit more boost)

Impossible if you have a sequential 'box though (or only 4 gears)

I was always taught to

a ) use the gearbox as well as the brakes to slow down, and

b ) be in the right gear for the speed you are doing

In addition, I was also always taught to not try and 'beat the syncros' (whatever that means)... and to double de-clutch if not going through the 'box. Maybe it doesn't matter with modern gearboxes, I still do it though... always.

I wouldn't advise putting it in reverse whilst moving forwards though

I've always selected the right gear for the right speed... though when accellerating I have been known to go from 1st to 5th. :D

Change down the box to utilise engine braking while rev matching to avoid unsetteling the car.

tripple figure speeds to 2nd gear corners would be interesting on just the pads

Nope - if you've ever driven an old mini you will know all about it ;)

Heel and toeing is also very good practice when changing down as it matches engine revs to gearbox input shaft speed (and sounds feckin' ace when you get it right :D )

if your driving steady thats how driving instructors are ment to teach you now, not to work down through the gears but to block change once the revs are low enough not to be too high afte you chage. something i was taught is gears for go brakes for slow, as it helps reduce wear to the gearbox if you block change apparently.
though i have to agree paul if your driving hard block changing from high speed would be interesting, you certainly would slow down quick though, unless your gearbox blew up.

im compltely lost on this now got a bit techy for me............ when i was learnng to drive not too long ago......i was taught as afore mentioned...so is this wrong??? i use the gears in accordance to my speed so if needs be and i have to slow down i use my brakes obviously but i also use my gears.....

well i learnt about the same time as you ang, which as ou said wasnt too long ago. if thats how your being taught then technical can it be wrong? is there a right and wrong way to change gear or is it just down to preference? personally i found it difficult to heel and toe the civic because of the accelerator being so far back from the brake pedal, i could do it easier in the crx but is it worth it, i think its abit of hassle to learn so i dont do it i change at low revs or block change, thats my preference.

Slowing with gears is all well and good but a few sets of diska dn pads is a bit cheaper than a twatted gearbox from selecting the wrong gear!!!

(and yes I do drop down through the box as reducing speed too! )
