With the discussion regarding car audio I have been promising myself some tunes for a while. I am only going to go simplish and not worry about amps etc.

So the question is, with the fascination of ICE, a few people got screen in the cars, are these really worth it, I mean do you use them or are they just a gimik that you get bored of after a while. I thought it might be useful in the furture if we took the kids away as I could then link it up to some rear screens and keep them entertained. But I suppose eye spy will suffice otherwise, plus its a much cheaper alternative....

But I have clocked this head unit which I think is pretty nice

Alpine DVA-9861Ri

I am a fan of Alpine which is why i would probably go for a screen by Alpine also.

Just wondered if anyone had any input on decent headunits etc and if they had a screen whether they got the useage out of it or in hindsight would they have bought a normal headunit.

i must admit when i had my screen in my legend it was cool, watching dvd,s and things is fun but ..... to be honest now i would just get a good old school non screen unit, you cant really watch while you drive, there to bright at night and id rather watch a dvd in my crib lol, although watching my jap dvds in the traffic jams on the way to work was good. ;)

See this is what I am thinking Nick, I have big teles at both homes and would rather watch films with surround sound etc etc than being distracted whilst driving. I can see the appeal but am also leaning towards old school unit for exactly the reasons you discribe.

Not only that but there is at least a £400 price difference... which means mo money to spend on handling, power etc etc

I'd stick to the old skool type. Screens are great for showy stuff (eg linking cameras to etc), but you're not going to use it for watching films on in reality.

You can get the kids a personal DVD player each for £160 (£80ea ;)).

One of my mates has got an Alpine TV Headunit and it is brilliant....for showing off! But you can't use it while driving.
Also as it's a distraction that could cause you to crash!
If you want to keep the Kids happy in the back then you could buy those screens that strap around the headrests with a DVD player!

ive got 2 headunits in mine, the ripspeed dvd headunit with built in screen which i bought mostly for if im on my breaks at college because theres nothing to do, and i also have a pioneer deh-p9600mp
which is brilliant for sound and as the ripspeed doesn't give good sound quality with cds due to it being designed around the dvd aspect more (though the sound for dvds is good and you do get a sense of surround sound because of the rear speakers.). i think if you want to keep the kids happy buy a portable dvd with built in screen that can be mounted on the headrest, that way you can also transfer it between cars (if you want 1 let me know ive used mine about twice so its not worth me keeping anymore). but from the sounds of it though paul you would be better off getting just a normal cd head unit but of good quality, something like the alpine or pioneer id recommend.

I bought that JVC one, and TBH I don't use it. The only time it's really been used by me is that drive back from Auto Sport last year. I wish I'd save the money and just bought a normal one.
I've got my eye on this one Pioneer DEH-P5800MP Car MP3 CD Tuner
I just want something simple, and it's as close to the standard unit in the Teg as you can get now.

I'd seriously consider going for a DAB unit. I put one in Mrs T's Berlingo for her birthday. Loads of great stations - Planet Rock, 6Music, 1extra, and better quality .... :)

JVC do one for £125, but the sound quality isn't the best, then another £80 for aerial and fitting.

I was thinking about a DAB headunit. But don't you have to have that ugly great arial on the roof?

you can get an upgrade so that it runs through your existing aerial jon, some people can even use dab without any aerial upgrades.

Must admit.... Ive always liked pioneer as a head unit... had kenwods and sonys but always came back to these.... would recomend you spend the extra 15 quid or so and get the 6800MP (already comes with a remote but ive bought the extra remote for the steering wheel which is great and only another £18)....you can have the sound automatically ajust itself against background noise etc and much nicer screen.
