Nation Name The Thracian Empire National Flag The flag of the Thracian Empire is of a dark green background, with a red, double headed Lion in the center. The mythical creature bears in it's claws a harp and a broken spear, symbolizing the spirit and ferocity of the Thracian people. Nation Class Barbarian Leader Overking of Thrace Phocas III Government Monarchy History Beginning in the Twelfth Century BCE, warlike Indo-Europeans, known as Thracians, began to gradually settle, and extend the influence of their culture. Following the Twelfth century, various Thracian kings would come to wield a vast amount of political power over the region of South Eastern Europe. Megalithic tombs, and massive structures would serve as testaments to the accomplishments of the Thracian people. With time, however, the power of Thrace would begin to wane as the once great society began to fragment into a plethora of minor tribes. The people of inner Thrace would be subjected to Greek culture, and gradually accepted these foreign traditions. The warlike Thracians of the Hinterlands, however, would remain in cultural isolation, thus developing a sense of cultural superiority. While the strength of Thrace was crippled, it was far from broken. Various Thracian clans would bring havoc and strife to their aggressive neighbors, possessing a ferocity in battle that was unmatched by any of their regional neighbors. The tribes of Thrace would regularly plunder the rich cities of Greece, Macedonia, the Cimmerian Bosporus, Asia, and even other parts of Thrace. The region known as Thrace possessed a massive population, and many historians would note in the future that the area had a massive potential power. But this power was not to be attained in this century, for disunity and rivalry amongst the peoples of Thrace held the once grand civilization back from advancement. In the late sixth century BCE, a King known as Teres would carve out a large Thracian Kingdom, uniting the many tribes of Thrace under a single banner. While his efforts did much to empower the area, he would subsequently be defeated by Darius I of Persia. Following the defeat of Teres, the majority of Thrace would be annexed by Persia, and converted into a satrapy. But this loss was only temporary. With the defeat of Darius' son, Xerxes, King Teres was able to banish Persia from the lands of Thrace, uniting the east under his kingdom once more. At age 92, King Teres died, and his kingdom passed onto his successor, Sitacles. During his reign, Sitacles would do much to advance the power and authority of the Thracian state. Sitacles proved himself to be a masterful ruler, and reorganized the state in a revolutionary manner. As a result of the King's internal projects, Thrace would embrace a financial prosperity which it had never seen before, and became a serious rival to those states which had so long eclipsed Thracian power. Sitacles would attempt to enhance the regional influence of his kingdom through conquests, however, he was defeated time and again, failing to solidify any significant gains. This new era of Thracian aggression would provoke Macedonia to conquer and subsequently subjugate the entirety of Thrace under the leadership of Phillip of Macedon. For decades Thrace would remain under the Macedonian yoke. But with time the iron grip of Macedonia would crack, and Thrace would be united once more. The oppressed mountain tribes of Thrakia would at last band together to combat Macedonian tyranny. They would be united under the authority of Phocas III, an ironfisted chieftain who rose from obscurity to uniting a massive empire of Thracian peoples, declaring himself Overking of Thrace.
