Angels

Appearance

Angelic appearance varies depending upon rank, but also personality. When the first generation was created, the Divine Being allowed them to shape their own appearances based on the personality they had. It was not a conscious thing on their part, simply an instinctual thing. Hair, eye, skin, and wing color are all determined this way. Though these can change over time, generally once they were formed, they remained the same.

For angel appearance, we're going to start generally, and then break it down into each 'rank' of being.

WINGS
Angels always have wings. Whether they hide them or not is the only variable. Wings range in color, but are most often white, grey, or shades of gold or silver. They have been known to take other shades, but there's usually a traumatic event that changes them to this shade. Red/crimson wings are a prime example. Wings are only stained this color by blood. Mortal, angel, demon... doesn't matter. Just so long as they've been covered in blood they'll take on the red color. Black wings are a characteristic gotten only two ways. An angel who's wings are damaged, 'killed' in essence, before healing and becoming functional again will turn black. Fallen angels almost always have black wings, though some are red, stained from their own blood. Other shades can be gotten through misuse of magic, power, or a drastic change in personality. Or they can be temporarily dyed, if the angel wants a different color THAT badly.

If your angel has oddly colored wings, you'd best have an explanation for WHY they are that color.

EYES
Angel eyes vary in shades, just as mortals. They can be anything from the lightest of silvers to the darkest of greys. There are two colors you will never see on anything but a fallen angel: black and any shade of red. These colors are obtained only by being corrupted by other fallen angels, or those in Hell--and only after they've been corrupted for some time. Hence, a corrupted angel may hid his/her nature for some time before it becomes apparent. The most common colors you'll find in angels are blues and greens, of all shades, though brown eyes do appear from time to time.

As with wings, if you have an odd shade, you'd best have personality that reflects that shade, or some event or corruption to explain them.

SKIN and HAIR
An angel's skin and hair aren't necessarily chosen due to personality, though this does play a part. Really, this is determined by their parents, and what their skin and hair is. The original angels had predetermined hair and eye color, though many shifted to what suited them best as they matured. The Divine Beings care not for skin and hair color, as they see all as equal. The modern clash between people because of skin color in particular, angers them.

Skin can be any you find here on the mortal realm, as well as a few more angelic shades of white, gold, silver, and other 'heavenly' metallics. Mostly, you'll find that angels prefer to keep to shades of skin similar to those of mortals, and those who have the metallic skin use magic or other means to blend in better. It's not that they are discriminated against, only a personal choice, since the tones are rare, and most would rather blend in than stand out. Occasionally, you have the rare odd one who loves the spotlight and will do anything to be in it, and will purposefully do everything s/he can to accent these rare tones.

Hair can be any shade from black to white and all the natural colors found in between: Red, brown, blonde, etc. Unnatural shades of these, as well as blues, greens, purples, pinks and the like are NOT found among the angels, unless they've used magic to dye their hair that shade.

[Hair can be inherited through parents instead of by personality. but ONLY if the angel is not a first GEN. First GEN is determined by personality and the divine's choice.]
Blacks -- more reserved, broody, darker personality. Or those who are secretive. A bad temper can also get you black hair, but only if it's the type of temper to be hidden until i blows up.
Browns -- more intellectual, thoughtful, quiet, reserved.... some attitude, but always well deserved on the other party's half. Protectors. These are the ones who feel a need to watch out for everyone.
Reds -- Fiery tempers, impulsive, more prone to being warriors. Those with red hair tend to react first and [maybe] ask questions later. They serve well as death angels as well as the warriors. Red hair can also hint at a more sadistic, darker streak, but not always.
Blondes -- Vain, egotistical, spiteful...these are a few of the qualities that tend to get an angel blonde hair. Though not always, these angels tend to be either bubble heads or so full of themselves they don't see others around them. Blondes can come with brown, red, or white highlights, [though occasionally an odd one with black streaks has been seen] and they are the most like to have traits from ALL of the colors, which can make them either well balanced, or completely out of control. One has but to look at the archs to see this.

FORM/ARMOR
Angels have an 'auto' armor that will appear when fighting. They can trigger this at any time, or keep it from triggering during a battle if they wish to be more hands on. Of all angel characteristics, this most reflects their inner soul and emotions. Red isn't necessarily bad, nor is black, and white isn't always seen as good. Most angels have several colors to their armor, with detailing in a deeper, brighter, or metallic color. The types of armor usually depend upon the rank of the angel, but can still be affected by personality. Not all archs will have identical armor, just in different colors. The shape of reflects their mind when battling, more than anything, and it can shift repeatedly if they're unpredictable in battle.

Most though, once they've had a few centuries to adjust, settle in with one permanent set of armor, regardless of shifts of fighting style, mood, etc..

Reds/Oranges -- Anger is one of many reasons for red. A powerful self control or one who likes to be in control of everything is another. Temper can also display in reds and oranges.

Golds/Silvers/Other Metallics Show up only on upper ranks of angels. Archs, arcs, seraphim only. Golds and silvers represent the divine powers they've been given, though they can also represent emotions. Golds are more stable and steady, positive emotions, while silvers represent a more unstable state/frame of mind and more negative emotions.
Bronze, brass, copper and other tones are more signifying the ranks of the seraphim than anything. Seraphim can make a conscious choice as to which of the lesser colors they may have detailing [or comprising of] their armor. Only Archs and Arcs may have gold and silver.

Yellows/Greens Yellow is a positive color, and armor that has yellow signifies a relaxed and confident warrior, one who possibly enjoys the battle more for the challenge of toying with the enemy than anything. Greens, it really depends on the shade. Darker greens signify an inner darkness that can come out at the worst of times, a berserker fury that can win -- or lose -- a battle. Brighter greens, especially toxic or neon ones hint at jealousy or other unhealthy emotions that are underlying problems in battle. Hatred can oft times show up in a neon yellow or toxic green.

Blues/Purples/Pinks Blues are a calm color. This is more like than not a healer. They care about others and their well being over their own. The lighter blues are more powerful on healing, while the darker ones are more guardians than healers. Purples can be a wide range of things. Deep royal purples signify bloodline more than personality. Someone with the deep royal purples [or blues] is probably descended from an Arch or Arc. It can also signify a leader, as royal colors show leadership, and the ability to lead depends in part on personality. Lighter purples are usually mixed with the lighter blues, and again are healers, though it also shows those who are more prone to magic in battle than swords or other weapons. Pink armor is hardly ever apparent, and no one's quite figured out what it means, even this many years later. [IE, you explain what it means if you have it]

Blacks/Greys/Whites
Blacks represent darker emotions, hatred that doesn't burn, but is there, depression, feelings of betrayal, a sadistic streak, or an evil side that never shows. Greys show depression and insecurity if the majority is colored this. Highlights represent slight insecurity or feelings of unease [usually about what they're fighting for]. Whites are considered holy, and are only ever seen on those who have been granted the right to wear them. White armor is an honor and if any white [even highlights] shows, this being has been honored by the different Divines. Blacks and greys also show up in armor if a fatal wound has been dealt in a battle.

On to the details of each rank of Angel... Each rank has certain things in their appearance that set them apart from other ranks. Keep these in mind when creating an angel.

Arch
Arch angels have several things that set them apart from the others. They are the generals in heaven, the Voice of God [the Metatron], oversee EVERYTHING.
--Wings are the biggest difference in archs. Archs have 3 sets of wings. They can have all sets showing, show only one, or hide them completely. They tend to have wings in golds, silvers, or white with touches of the metallics.
--Form/Armor is the other big difference. All archs have been granted the honor of white armor. Most mix it with other colors that fit their personality, but some do not. It all depends on their preferences. Their armor is the MOST impressive of all the angels, with the most detailing and designs far different than any lesser angels.

Arc
Arcs are essentially the same as the Archs, only they are not one of the original 10 angels. They are the warriors of Heaven.
--Wings are again different. They have two to three sets of them [usually two, unless they are one of the original 'created' angels] and they tend to be white with colored tips, usually metallics, though sometimes other shades such as grey, black, even lighter browns....
--Their form/armor is fairly impressive, with the design and detailing only slightly less than that of an Arch. Arcs are not automatically granted white armor, but many of them have distinguished themselves in the original wars or the struggles that followed and have been given the honor.

Seraphim
Seraphim are those who oversee the realms of heaven. They guide the souls to the different spheres and make sure the every day goings on are not causing problems. They are the first to become aware of a problem and are expected to bring it to the Archs' attention. They tend to focus on healing -- both of the soul and the body.
--Seraphim have one set of wings, but they have a glow around them in whatever color suits them best. Usually this deals with whatever element they favor.
--Their form/armor is impressive, with detailing and designs that signify their rank. Nothing so splendid as archs or arcs though.

Angels of Death
Angels of Death answer to Uriel, the Arch-Angel of Death. They do the majority of work around the heavens and on the mortal plain with claiming souls who've passed on or who have been chosen to die before theirs... [or, on rare occasions, have lived past their time] They carry out the Divines' orders of punishment and many times plagues and curses are their work.
--They have one set of wings, with a black aura that hovers around them at all times. Their wings can be any of the standard colors, but when using their powers they seem almost skeletal/rotting in design, and the feathers turn black.
--Their form/armor also has the black aura around it, though the armor can be any of the standard colors. Their design is usually plain, but the detailing is over the top, with many symbols of death and punishment etched into them.

Guardian Angels
Guardian Angels have several callings. Their main charge is to look after mortals, especially those favored by the Archs or Divines. If they're not doing that, they are to help guide souls through their journey before reaching Heaven. They too are fighters, but they make up the majority of the army of heaven, while Archs and Arcs make up the generals and commanders.
--Guardians have two sets of wings, one of them ALWAYS white to signify their calling. Their other set reflects personality, and can be any of the regular colors. Guardians are most known for using magic or other means to dye their wings an odd color.
--Form/Armor is unique, in that it has an almost white grey sigal that shows they are Guardians. Their armor is more complex than Angels of Death, but nowhere near even that of Seraphims. It's lighter, as it needs to be able to function on the earthly realm more than the Heavenly one, and normal rules apply there.

Angels
Regular angels do all sorts of duties around heaven, and are the force that make day to day life for those who've passed on pleasant. They are musicians, poets, whatever the souls they serve need. [Which can include athletes for those who enjoy sports.] They are oft times humans who've been granted the reward of becoming an angel. Most never have a hope of earning a higher rank.
--Angels have one set of wings, most often white or light grey naturally, though they can range. They are also known for dying their wings odd colors to set themselves apart.
--Form/Armor is simple, with only a few detailings and a functional design only. It's color is based entirely on personality.

Fallen Angels
Fallen angels can be of any rank, though most tend to be from Seraphim on down. They are now outcast, or they have chosen to serve Hell. Many have approached Lucifer, to see if they might help him contain Hell, and he's a reputation for allowing them to, regardless of how angry it makes those in Heaven.
--Wings are always black or red, though some try to hide this with dye. It never fully works as black or red tips or highlights will always show through--this is part of their punishment for 'shaming' Heaven. They have as many sets of wings as they had as an angel, though some have chosen to cut them off, signaling that they are defying Heaven even there, as their wings are a sign of their status. Many have taken on demonic/draconic wings, and these wings always take on the color of choice of the fallen angel.
--Form/Armor of a fallen is different. Though it retains some of it's original angelic features, many demonic ones have been taken as well. The armor almost always has a head piece that includes horns, and when the armor triggers, fangs tend to appear and the eyes take on a glow. Colors are dull from what they were before, or have gone completely black.

Angels powers vary, though all have control over one or more element. There are several rankings of angel. They are as follows: Arch, Arc, Seraphim, Guardian, Death, and Angels. There are special ranks besides these, but only one can hold the title at a time. The Metatron and the Morningstar are two such titles. The second has not been continued past its first use, with Lucifer, as no one wants to follow in his footsteps.
Archs are the original angels and are more powerful than any others. There are only seven of them now, though there were originally 10 [The Morningstar, the Metatron, and the General of Heaven were all considered archs at one time. Lucifer and Sammael are the first and last, respectively.]
Arcs are the next down. Their power is equivalent to that of Michael or Gabriel. They can control all elements, but tend to favor one. They are the warriors of Heaven.
Seraphim are the next down, and they are the ones in charge of the different realms in heaven. They oversee the mortals who have been admitted there, and assist in guiding new arrivals to their respective spheres. Their powers are usually healing based, though they still have control of one element.
Guardian Angels are those that watch over people on earth. Not everyone has a guardian assigned just to them, though there are mortals who are granted one specifically for them, usually because a Divine Being or higher angel favors them. They are fighters, and can manipulate the environment around their charges as needed to protect them. They have control of ONE element.
Angels of Death are those sent to carry out the will of the Divine Beings. They are usually sent to punish mortals for disobeying some command or another, though they also help keep things under control on earth when things start to go sour.
Angels are the typical hosts of heaven, and carry out various tasks that none of the others will. They are the lowest in ranking, and most were once mortals who've been granted the 'honor' of serving their Divine Being of their choice.

Angels cannot pass onto the human realm without some sort of portal to allow them access. They have to take on a mortal form to be able to do so, and most are loathe to give up the majority of their powers.
