Economic System
Mixed Economy
In the very early years of Israel's birth many utilities, media services and industry was controlled by the state in large part so as to jump start the economy and provide the vast flow of new immigrants with jobs. In addition most agriculture and a lot of industry was controlled by kibbutzim which were socialist-style collective farms. However as the country became stable most parts of the public sector have been privatized aside from military-industrial production and Bezek the state-owned telephone company which is partially privatized. In addition kibbutzim have become more capitalist to stay competitive in the Israeli market but are still a major powerhouse of agricultural industry.

2nd Tier

History
After winning it's independence in 1948 Israel was left with a narrow strip of territory behind the green line. The state very existence was opposed by all Muslim countries and many others including their main donor of aid and arms, the Soviet Union. A new leader Nasser arose in Egypt who was militaristic and nationalist to a frightening degree and vowed to destroy the state of Israel and fight foreign imperialism. Britain and France had already pleaded with Nasser not to nationalize the Suez Canal but it was too late. With European military support and a huge flow of American arms Israeli forces swept through the Sinai Penninnsula and Egyptian occupied Gaza. Egypt was badly beaten and the other Arab states were still recovering from the independence fiasco. Israel engaged in extensive talks but Nasser was unwilling to recognize the State in exchange for the Sinai. Israel built up massive defenses along the Suez but was still plagued by terrorist attacks by Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank controlled by Jordan and the Golan Heights. The Arabs regrouped and funded by the Soviet Union established a collective military to rival Israel's. In September 1967 Israel launched a preemptive strike against Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt. The air force destroyed nearly all Arab aircraft and after six days the Israeli army had overrun the West Bank, the Golan Heights, southern Lebanon and had sacked Cairo. Nasser was forced to sign a peace treaty recognizing Israel with sovereignty over the Sinai and Gaza. This was met with violent protests and Nasser's government capitulated broken and defeated. Jordan sued for peace and quickly recognized Israel with control over the West Bank. Syria and Lebanon signed armistices and the United Nations quickly demand Israel withdraw from Lebanon which Israel complied with but not the Golan. Years later in an attempt to regain the Golan and for revenge, Syria, Lebanon and now Iraq attacked Israel on the holiest day in Judaism, Yom Kippur. Though the Arabs made early gains, Israel dealt back a decisive blow, coming within ten miles of Damascus and going on to occupy all of Lebanon. Syria agreed to another armistice but Lebanon also capitulated and descended into anarchy between opposing Shiite, Sunni and Christian factions. Israel remains today occupying Lebanon, having fully annexed all the other territories which exist with relative peace and prosperity in Israel.
(I'll make this look nicer later)

NEWS:
After an intense past few months of campaigning and amidst an ongoing war, Israel held parliamentary elections, which ended up strongly favoring the centrist Kadima party of Tzipi Livni. After crushing her primary rival Benyamin Netanyahu of Likud, Livni is poised to form a coalition rather quickly to ensure a swift change in governance amidst the war. Ehud Barack is expected to remain Defence Minister, however a surprise strong showing by the ultranationalist Yisrael Beiteinu is likely to ensure its leader Avigdor Lieberman a government position, most likely in finance.
Speaking from her election headquarters in Tel Aviv, Tzipi Livni said this war would become a "platform for peace" with neighbors in the region. Throughout the campaign Livni has derided her opponent's hawkish views towards Syria and Jordan, instead focusing on the threat from Egypt. However Livni has shown support for the decision to enter Syria and Jordan to prevent their current state of flux from degenerating into anarchy and a possible haven for terrorists. Lieberman's eventual role in the new coalition will most likely shift Livni's war policy towards the right, however pundits speculate Lieberman will have no strong hand in foreign policy, and will instead be a driving force for the further separation of synagogue and state.
