Language
Owing its origins to Rome the original language of the Empire was Latin and this continued to be the official language of the Empire until the 6th century AD when it changed officially to Greek.

Religion
The survival of the Roman Empire in the East assured an active role of the Emperor in the affairs of the Orthodox Church. The Byzantine state inherited from pagan times the administrative, and financial routine of administering religious affairs, and this routine was applied to the Church. Following the pattern set by Eusebius of Caesarea, the Byzantines think of the Emperor as a representative or messenger of Christ, responsible particularly for the propagation of Christianity, and for the externals of the religion, such as administration and finances. The strong Imperial role in the affairs means the Imperial Orthodox Church is essentially an arm of government, supporting the Emperor and doing his bidding.

Leader
His Most Awesome and Terrible Majesty Emperor Adrastos I

This greedy, avaricious old man cares nothing for the people of his realm he hopes instead to retake the Empire's lost territory by force and put himself, or one of his descendents, into a position where he could claim the whole of the Balkans & Middle-East. Failing that, he hopes the histories will reflect him as a great statesman.

A master political manipulator who is well known for his dark cunning, the Emperor has hatched many plots aimed at increasing his own personal power and recovering the Empire's old provinces. The Emperor surrounds himself with men and women of similar calibre, all greedy and capricious. Of course, the Emperor is aware that doing so is risky, so he compels their loyalty through fear either of his wrath or the secret police controlled by his loyal lieutenant, Lord Desierain.

A man in his mid-sixties and of sometimes-questionable health, Adrastos has survived much longer than anyone expected of him, much to the chagrin of his enemies. He has already outlived his wife who died a few years ago.

Officials
Viceroy of Crete Andronicus Kyriakos.
Archduke of Greece Kostas Karamanlis
Duke of Cyprus Basil Mesardonites
Lord of the Imperial Armies George Maniakes.
Lord Chamberlin John Troglita.
Head of the Imperial Bureaucracy Sico Protospatharios
Head of the Secret Police Lord John Desierain

Government
Absolute Monarchy

Economic Tier
2nd Tier

Economic System

History
Early history to siege of Constantinople.

During her millennial old reign the Empire, a bastion of Christianity and one of the prime trade centers in the world, helped to shield Western Europe from early Muslim expansion, provided a stable gold currency for the Mediterranean region, influenced the laws, political systems, and customs of much of Europe and the Middle East, and preserved much of the literary works and scientific knowledge of ancient Greece, Rome, and many other cultures. Byzantium has always been a power in the world ruled by despots and poets, fools and wise men, all combining political and religious authority in one man
As an outgrowth of the eastern portion of Empire founded in Rome, the Byzantine Empire's evolution into a separate culture from the West can be seen as a process beginning with Emperor Constantine's transferring the capital from Nicomedia in Anatolia to Byzantium on the Bosphorus (then renamed Nova Roma, and later Constantinople). By the 7th century under the reign of Emperor Heraclius, whose reforms changed the nature of the Empire's military and recognized Greek as the Empire's language, the Empire had taken on a distinct new character.
Thoughout its existence the Empire has suffered numerous setbacks and losses of territory yet it remained the most powerful economic and military power in Europe, North Africa, and the near East for much of the Middle Ages. After a recovery under the Komnenian dynasty in the 12th century the Empire slipped into a long decline culminating in the siege of Constantinople.
By 1453 Constantinople was underpopulated and dilapidated. The population of the city had collapsed so severely that it was now little more than a cluster of villages separated by fields. On April 2, 1453, the Sultan Mehmed II, and an army of some 80,000 men and his hordes of irregulars laid siege to the city. The army led by the Emperor Constantine XI was small; it totaled about 7,000 men, 2,000 of whom were foreigners. However this small Garrison repeatedly drove back the Ottoman assaults, frustrated and humiliated by this lack of progress the young Sultan took a fateful decision he would take part the next assault personally. This brave but foolish act cost Mehmed his life he was shot and morally wounded by lowly Byzantine archer, with their leader dead the Ottoman host faltered. The Ottomans had recently suffered a ruinous civil war over the throne Mehmed had no clear successor. Byzantium was no threat so the Ottomans factions resolved to solve their own dynastic crises before finishing the Empire off.
An unwise decision Byzantium had weathered many storms; its emperors were masters of survival in the face of adversity. The city’s survival in the face of such overwhelming odds led many to believe god had blessed Constantine XI, using his new found prestige the emperor was able to secure aid from western countries who did not want to see Ottoman power resurgent, and wanted Byzantium to once again stand as a bulwark against Islam.
Using the support of western allies Constantine XI started a slow and careful reconquista by retaking Nicomedia and other parts of western Anatolia, and overtaking parts of northern Greece. By the time of his death a few decades later Constantine XI had secured Byzantium’s position, the Ottoman Turks had split into small kingdoms all sense of organization and unity gone though the Byzantine Empire was still small. The foundations Constantine XI laid would be built upon by his successors.

Late Middle Ages to Industrial Revolution:

Constantine XI’s successor Artos I, proved to be as great an Emperor as his predecessor, continuing Constantine XI’s strategy of slow careful conquest. He conquered the reminder of Greece, secured western Anatolia, and brought Trebizond & Sinope under Imperial control. By the end of his rein Artos I had overrun several of the many Turkish sultanates and taken the city of Iconium. By 1513 the population of Constantinopie has risen to 130,000
The mightiest conquests were to be made by the last of ‘’the three great emperors’’ Belisarius the Magnificent, a good administrator, who overhauled the old-fashioned Byzantine bureaucracy which had been badly in need of reform. It was on the battlefield were Belisarius showed his true greatness as a leader. During his 50-year reign he was constantly on campaign, defeating the Bulgars, force them to sear fealty to the Empire. The Turkish Sultanates fell one by one, until the Byzantine power reached Mesopotamia. In the last year of his glorious rein Belisarius took the city of Antioch, and was planning to launch a campaign into the holy lands. Before he could put his plan into action the old-emperor died at the age of 75.
The Empire now had a large and restive Muslim population under its control, under the reign of the three great emperors; the Orthodox Church had been vigorously converting conquered populations, the movement and officials in the new provinces. Followed a dual-policy of brutal de-turkification and vigorous byzantization. By the end of the 16 century this process was largely complete, and Byzantium was poised to become the greatest power in the Middle-East.

Modern times:

By 1900 Byzantium was the sick man of Europe the grand old empire held sway over much of the Middle East and the Balkans, but it was stagnant, its industry undeveloped military almost obsolete: The two Balkan wars were a disaster for the empire it lost both Bulgaria, Greece, and other possessions to its rivals. The Empire also had to put down serious rebellions in its Middle East & Mesopotamian province. Serbia’s increase in territory and its alliance with Russia alarmed Byzantium; to such a degree it sided with the Central powers of Germany & Austria during WW1. By the wars end the Byzantine population was devastated, The Empire lost is a middle-eastern provinces to the French and British. The empire was dismembered and occupied by the allied forces
The occupations quickly generated disorganized local oppositions by numerous militant resistance groups. The establishment of an organized national resistance movement a young Byzantine officer named Belisarius a hero of the Gallipoli campaign united these factions and started the Byzantine war of independence by 1922 he had re-taken Constantinople and driven allied forces out of Byzantium's core territories. However Greece except for Crete remained under the control of a western puppet government.
Belisarius was crowned Emperor of Byzantium in 1923 starting a new imperial dynasty, and started the procces of re-building and modernizing his war-ravaged nation. He sought peace with Byzantium’s former enemies and his polices brought huge improvements to the Empire
Byzantium remained neutral during WW2, much of this can be traced to the Emperor Michael II disgust at Mussolini and fascist Italy’s Roman pretensions, as Byzantines are the only true Romans.
Belisariu's successor, fostered a posthumous Belisarius personality cult which has survived to this day, even after Atatürk's face and name are seen and heard everywhere in Turkey: his portrait can be seen in all public buildings, in schools, in all kinds of school books, on Byzantine banknotes, and in the homes of most Byzantine families, he has even been canonized as a saint by the Imperial Orthodox Church. Even after so many years, on 10 November, at 09:05 a.m. (the exact time of his death), almost all vehicles and people in the country's streets will pause for one minute in remembrance of Belisariu's memory.
During the cold war Byzantium had to tread a delicate line between the two-sides, The Empire mostly lent it's support to Russia due to its powerful army and close proximity. After the downfall of the Soviet Union, The Empire is now ruled by canny old Emperor Adrastos.
