History For hundreds of thousands of years, the nomadic tribes of Tian lived in peace and harmony with each other and nature. The land was bountiful, and the tribes hunted and gathered for their needs, and they were contented for there was enough for everybody. Each tribe had its own egalitarian customs, laws and beliefs, but this diversity never gave rise to tribal disputes. Instead, they understood that there was no one right way of living, only that each tribe had its own way of living. The tribes competed with each other for food, but they never set out to eliminate another tribe. There was no need to, for there was ample food all around. They never took more than they needed. Carrying extra was a burden and they needed to be on the move for the hunt. The nomadic way of life prevented famine and diseases from spreading. Tribe population never grew too large and remained stable, since a moving tribe grew inefficient with large numbers. There was also only enough food from the game they hunted for a small group. If they killed too much to satisfy more mouths, then they would hunt their food to extinction and prompt their own demise. Hunting for thousands of years made them to be expert trackers. An underlying result of their knack for piecing together simple details to develop complex stories (from reading track patterns, to predicting animal behavior, to understanding how nature worked, all of which was usually told around a campfire), was evolving with the ability of clairvoyance. The constant seeing into the unknown gave them superior conceptualization, and this led to higher brain functions, which eventually led to gifted foresight and telepathy. These higher beings were capable of things beyond the wildest imagination. Their powers evolved dramatically. They were at the cusp of evolving into supreme entities, or what some would call gods. But somewhere along the way, a telepathic disease almost wiped the tribes to extinction. The death rates outpaced the birthrates, and their women could not bear enough offspring, especially with the nomadic lifestyle. They had to settle down and work harder with the sweat of the brow to till the land to grow crops, as this was the dawn of agriculture and the end of the nomadic way of life. They suddenly had a taste of controlling the environment, taking food when they wanted, stripping the land's resources as they saw fit, taming and domesticating animals, wiping out entire species that interfered with crops. This new sense of power and dominion over nature intoxicated most of them. This was the beginning of The Fall of Tian. As time went by, their abilities were forgotten along with the ability to track and hunt and read the signs of nature. Villages grew in numbers with the surplus of food as a result of agriculture and farming. More people meant more mouths to feed, and they needed more land for food. The concept of territory arose, and that was when territorial wars first broke. Nature was slowly being destroyed, forests cut down, rivers polluted, animals becoming extinct. Famine and density-dependent diseases which led to epidemics became more common. Catastrophic calamities which never affected roaming peoples wiped out villages. The first empires arose, and the first massacres along with it. Atrocities were becoming more abundant, and more and more people were becoming oppressed. Salvationist cults were created to try to explain the inexplicable events that were going on, and to console the people telling them how to 'save' their lives through repression and obedience. This resulted in even more crimes and atrocities. The next thousand years would be the lowest point of their 'civilization'. The remaining few who still possessed gifted abilities tried to intervene, but they were considered freaks of nature and cast out of society. The last few of the Nomads went into hiding, some in the wilderness and some disguised among them, waiting for the day when they would return to end civilization and restore the balance of the world.
