It was dusk on the African savannah. Heat rose from the earth like steam and the temperature would continue to decline steadily. These were the most ideal hunting conditions. From her perch on a large sandy rock, Talarya looked like a ghost against the darkening sky. She smelled the wind for prey, but in these badlands, anything substantial had already been claimed by nomadic groups. Her white color was also disadvantageous as she didn't blend into the grass very well. She wondered if she would go another night without anything to eat... A Springhare leaped from a cluster of grass - was the tiny morsel worth her energy? |

Talarya noticed the small springhare as it lept from cover and began to graze on a small tft of grass. She sniffed the air, nothing else was within olfactory range. She had to go for it, to try and get that small scrap of food. Crouching low to the ground, the young lioness moved round the hare until the slight breeze was blowing away from it and towards her. Hopefully now the small beast wouldn't smell her until it was too late. Stealthily, the white lioness moved towards her prey, green eyes focused upon that and only that. Twenty metres, fifteen metres, ten metres. Talarya slowed down even more, she didn't want to mess it up and lose her dinner. When she was only 2 metres away from the hare, she lept. |

Today was her lucky day; the springhare didn't know what hit him. Talarya searched out a safer place to eat than this bald patch of earth. The winds shifted and she smelled something that made her hair raise - hyena. |

Hyena!!! The young lioness hated hyenas, her mind flashed back to an incident just after the break-up of the tribe. She was hungry and hadn't spotted anything for several days. Then, out of the blue she saw a baby deer which had somehow been separated from its mother. Her luck looked to be turning. With out much effort she had brought down and killed the young animal and was about to sate her hunger on it when the hyenas attacked. She had tried to defend what was hers, but in the end sheer numbers had won the day and she was left growling in frustration. Yes, she hated hyenas. Hare in mouth she hurried away from the hyena smell, trying to get as much distance from them as she could and also trying to find a nice cool spot to enjoy her snack. |

Her search was in vain. While she had been preoccupied with catching the small creature, the cruel, mocking beasts had slowly surrounded her and in moments they were darting out of the tall grass, taunting her. They leaped out one at a time from different angles, barking and snapping but too cowardly to attack her on their own. She had played this game before - the hyenas were trying to confuse and frustrate her, but she knew that their patience would wane shortly and they may all attack at once. |

Talarya ran on through the tall grass, growling from the back of her throat at the annoying creatures who were now all around her. She knew that she had to do something soon or risk not only losing the hare which she had caught only minutes before but there was also the possibility that the young lioness could lose her life to the hyenas. Now hyenas rarely attacked a group of lions but they would certaily try to attack and kill one by itself. Cowards, she thought. Then she saw the tree, just low enough for her to get into and just high enough so that the hyenas wouldn't be able to follow. Banking slightly to her right, she began to run for it hoping that she could make it befoer the hyenas attacked in force. |

While lions are not natural tree-climbers, Talarya's strong claws dug into the bark of the tree and she was able to awkwardly scale a thick branch which was barely out of the brutes' jaws reach. She snarled at them circling down below her, careful not to drop the little creature in her jaws. One or two leaped up to try and grab her tail. She didn't know how long they might stay. She realized that if they didn't leave before soon, she might have to sacrifice the tiny morsel to distract them and allow her to get away. |

The young lioness was damned if she was going to let that bunch of mangy freaks get her dinner. She looked down at the hyenas and saw that she was just out of their range and she knew that Hyenas didn't climb trees. Carefully she placed it on the tree in front of her and carefully began to eat. It didn't take her long to finish the small hare and when she had she glared defiantly at her tormenters. Deciding to play the bluff card Talarya yawned and settled down on the branch, seeming to not have a care in the world. Hopefully the hyenas would grow bored and just leave. |

The hyenas snarled and barked in frustration. They could play all the jokes they wanted but when the tables were turned, things got ugly. A few more tried to leap up in vain to snatch at her tail, but to no avail. Of the six cackling beasts, five got bored and eventually trotted off. Talarya almost didn't realize that the sixth was still sitting at the base of the tree until she was about to climb down... |

Just as she was about to jump off the tree, Talarya saw out of the corner of her eyes that one of the foul beasts had stayed behind. Momentary confusion almost caused the white lioness to jump back, maybe they were trying to trick her into coming down. On the other hand this was a great opportunity to take one of them out. Pretending not to have seen the mangy creature Talarya set off at a trot away from the tree, hoping that the hyena would follow and plotting in her mind what she would do if it was stupid enough to try. |

Talarya couldn't believe her luck. The hyena just sat there! She slowed her pace, feeling more confident. Her conficence evaporated, however, when she heard the taunting yips and cackles only meters in front of her, hidden in the tall grass. |

As she heard the sounds in front of her, Talarya stopped. They had her right where they wanted her, it seemed, in a pincer movement with hyenas to the front and behind. Well, only one behind. If she could take that one out before the others caught up then that could scare the rest into running. Either that or it would just be very satisfying. She whirled around and ran full speed back towards the hyena at the foot of the tree intending to kill the beast as soon as she got there. |

The hyena was much stronger than Talarya would have imagined. She had never taken one on her own before and she was surprised at how fast it was. It's powerful jaws found her tail and bit down hard, but a strong blow of Talarya's paw to it's face caused it to let go. |

Talarya vaguely felt a tight pain in her tail where the hyena bit her but didn't let herself dwell on it as she swiped it with a paw which made the creature let go. Quick as a flash, the young lioness lept onto the hyenas back, hoping to finish it off with a bite to the neck. |

The hyena's spine was no match against Talarya's crushing jaws. It gave one last pitiful yelp and collapsed beneath her, twitching. Talarya released her victim, sensing trouble. The pack of laughing dogs were now snarling, their tempers flaring up at the death of their fellow. One hyena was one thing, and a pack was another. Talarya again had to make the decision to fight or run. |
