[Ardenvaal] The Core

PWNZED BY BREATH ATTACK!

For most of the Sky Elves that make their home here in Ardenvaal, The core is where the liferoot of their people is believed to be. At the center of every Ardenthor is a spirit of a fallen Sky Elf, who's quest is to reach for the sky, and touch with the Sun. With each spirit, A new Ardenthor is birthed, and a new life for A Sky Elf begins as they become one with Nature and start a new cycle of their neverending journey.

They say that the Ardenthor where Ardenvaal started upon is the spirit of the first High Elf who brought his people to this serene and inoccuous place, where nothing could touch them. And here, spreading out onto other Ardenthors, Ardenvaal's Core insures the safety of its people.

But the Core of Ardenvaal was not looking pristine. Ardenvaal seemed to be shrouded in mists and heavy fogs lately, which was not uncommon, but for the dry season, it was unnatural. The Core did not look as healthy as it used to.

To get an idea of what an Ardenthor looks like, imagine cutting down a tree somewhere near its stump. then, hollow out the center of it and fill it with soil. Now, grow some herbs in that soil, and after a while, the tree stump looks looks like its growing a small forest on top. Multiply the size of this stump by a couple of hundred, and duplicate this stump a couple thousand, maybe a million times, and you get the Ardenthor forest.

The Core of each Ardenthor is its second life-cycle, as it grows a massive central tree-like limb that feeds the flora and fauna atop of its wooden plateau. Imagine seeing a bud growing out of the center of a tree-stump. Same idea. This "Core" then brings up nutrients from the nutrient-rich earth and feeds itself along with the other smaller trees and shrubbery that grows upon it. Ultimatley, you get minature forests growing atop a much massive forest of tree stumps.

Here, at Ardenvaal's Core, the magicks of the native Faerie Dragons and the Sky Elves helped shape the woods into a governor's villa that was supposed to signify its oneness with the city as well as its people. But alas, that oneness has started to fade. It's an earthen plaza of stone and wood, where the citizens gather to hear about the new laws of the land each and every week. It's a center of listening to the new "Trade" and the new peoples that pass through this strange and wonderful town, bringing in foreign goods and plagued materials. The Sky Elves were happy by themselves, But Sek'Thelia Oravinea feels that Ardenvaal should reach out to the other cities with open arms and an open mind. And here, another meeting was called.

Sek'Thelia stood at an open window of his villa, and spoke to the hundreds of citizens gathered there that day.

"My fellow peoples! This previous night, an attempt at my life was made! Have I not brought you prosperity? Wealth? Good Health? And yet, one of our own kind made an attempt at my life. I don't feel I'm a bad person! I've tried my hardest to make Ardenvaal as beautiful and wonderful as it is today. And it pains me that I must make an example of its people."

A Scalamb was rolled towards the front of the mob, and then raised with rope for all of the onlookers to see.

"It truly does pain me... This man here was captured outside of the villa, with weapon in hand and a gaze that would've froze a stag in its tracks. For this outrage, this man must be punished."

A silent crowd stood onlooking at the man, as a hushed whisper creeped its way among the people. Sek'Thelia calmed the crowd down, then spoke words.

"Is there one among you today that believes otherwise?"

You can post in Ardenvaal now. :p

Poor was hardly the word to describe the Sky Elf. Easily in his mid life, about two hundred, two hundred and fifty years old, well dressed, and very devonaire. He started to shout at the two Guards who were now in the process of literally dragging him across the stone plaza.

"Do you not know who I am? I'm Ferashane Novinarius! Release me at once!"

The guards didn't seem to take notice to the Sky Elf's name, nor did they seem to care. The Sky Elf kept talking to the guards.

"I work for Sek'Thelia! I'm his trade advisor! release me!"

And again, the guards continued to ignore the cries of the Sky Elf. They produced a Scalamb somewhere near the side of the Governor's Villa, where they viciously pushed him in and locked the cage door. The Guards started to push the curious onlookers away from the second outrageous spectacle to be witnessed in a single day.

"Move along or we will charge you with contempt of release of a prisoner! This is official business! Move along or else!"

The two Guards started to push away the onlookers, one of them Imulin. Another pair of Guards emerged from a nearby Villa entrance and started to haul the Scalamb down the path towards the Eastern Bridge.

Perhaps Imulin could get a better look and not be harrassed if he stayed to the far edge of the small dirt road...

He heard a whisper behind him amongst two other Sky Elves as the Guards continued to push the Onlookers away.

He does so, skirting the edge of the dirt road in a crouch, trying to stay hidden in the shadows. He throws his cloak around him, and stays as quiet as he can.

Ryu walks into town, his composure undisturbed, his concentration flawless. Not even the crowd around him distracts from his goal: knowledge.

Kaworu's eyes suddenly widened in anger and exertion, putting a good deal of spiritual power and physical strength into himself as he slammed his spear shaft vertically forward against Jeff's locked blade to send him back.

"And you would give your life for such a meaningless task? Delaying me will not halt my goals."

Yes, I fought Kaworu. And I lived.[RPGData:10005|9|28|56|3|3|482|222|Dragon Sword|Dragon Armor|Dwarf|40551|None|None|134|6|1|0|None|NaN|None|The Klu Klux Klan]

Imulin did this for a second, but when he realized that just staying a good amount of distance away, he would not attract much attention anyway, as the road was filled with Sky Elves and a few unfamiliar faces passing by anyway.

Imulin kept stride with the Scalamb and its prisoner, when a certain face caught his attention; an outlander, obviously from some distant land, with strange robes and black shoulder-length hair. He was coming from the East Road which the Scalamb was currently travelling down, in the opposite direction towards the city edge.

Ryu stops when he sees the large cage with what apparently is a Sky Elf inside. In his search for knowledge, this seemed most interesting. There were seven Guardsmen, all wearing some sort of armor and protecting the cage, at least to his knowledge. One of the Guards "fluttered" his wings, which were quite an impressive display of blues, blacks, pinks, and a streak of yellow. Not too far up the road, though, was a sign written in high elvish, and undoubtedly some sort of shop as a few Sky Elves went in and out of the earthen door.

At this point, most of the other inhabitants of Ardenvaal had two interesting things to look at; an outsider with jet-black hair, and another Sky Elf submitting to the will of Sek'Thelia Oravenia. It was definitely a strange day...

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Traveanduri did not hesitate to make tracks after she recovered her personal affects.

"Oh, forget him. Come... I need to meet with others."

Leveticus followed Traveanduri as they made haste through the streets. If its one thing that the female Sky Elf hated was having any type of weapon on her. More often then not, Guard patrols would randomly check citizens for weapons or devices that could be used as weapons. And often, outsiders were the first to be checked.

If you had a weapon on you, it wasn't like you got incarcerated, you would just have to check your steel with the Guards, who would keep it in a safe house until you were ready to leave the Core. Most business took place in the core, so merchants and the like would not expect the unexpected if a deal went bad.

Regardless, as if by coincidence or fate, Traveanduri was heading Along the East Road, as was the Scalamb and the Sky Elf within it. After some time searching the Central Plaza, her search took her within eyesight of the man she was looking for, who was now behind the bars of a Scalamb.

"Oh no... This is not good..."

Traveanduri started to follow the Scalamb and its pack of Guards.

Leviticus shrugged.
"He wasn't my friend...just some fellow...I think he followed that fellow who was shouting about corruption...they're probably both dead or arrested by now, I figure."
He paused.
"You had something to say?"
He followed Traveanduri through the streets, sighing, interrupted.
"What's wrong, you know the fellow in the Scalamb?"

"I have come from the mountain town of Salvation, on my graduation exam. Monk Ryu, at your service." Ryu held out his hand, with a friendly smile he had been practicing for years. Nobody had ever seen through his friendly disguise, much less any of his others, including that of the Salvation monk in training.
"Why is that sky elf being held in a cage?" Ryu asks the unfamiliar man.

Traveanduri looked to Leveticus, who she found rather unappealing in all of his wild glory. Wild pink hair, a scraggly demeanor, it reminded her of the Wild Elves of the Southwest, in a manner of speaking. She had never seen one, but read about them in the many books in the--

She trailed off again. She was notorious for not being able to keep her concentration at critical moments, and this, she felt, was a critical moment. One of the several contacts of the Resistance was now caged in a Scalamb, which was being wheeled to probably the edge of the Core. And then, away from there, down into the Waterglades.

The Waterglades were a cruel place, no doubt, especially in the area they were in. Well, not so much as the fringe areas where there is less activity by the outsiders exploring the Watery depths. If they really wanted to scare a Sky Elf, or rather, put them to death, then anywhere in the Waterglades a few miles outside of the Core would've been sufficient. Rumors have it that even bigger creatures slither and crawl and fly their way through the misty sub-terran world.

And here, one of the Resistance's most important contacts was now entrapped and obviously being taken to hang over the hellacious floor of the Sky Elf's "underworld." There have been instances where Scalambs were cut down, either on accident, purpose, or by chance, and the prisoner did not make it through the night. Grizzly.

Traveanduri thought... and the plan she had she didn't like, but it would work.

"You understand that we have to free that Sky Elf imprisoned... unless you agree with our Governor, Sek'Thelia Oravenia." The magic whispered upon Leveticus' ears, letting him hear the words of the mysterious and beautiful Traveanduri.

"What say you, will you help me? Will you help the Resistance?"

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

As the outsider and the Sky Elf converse, the Scalamb continues to wheel its way ever closer to the Core's edge. Within the next half hour, the Scalamb would no doubt be hanging over the Waterglades, pysching out its prisoner.

Leviticus laughed, slapping her lightly on the shoulder and smirking.
"I believe I will help you, if only because of your remarkable beauty. Otherwise, I don't involve myself in politics or dead blokes. Count me in."

PWNZED BY BREATH ATTACK!

Traveanduri seemed baffled of the strange man. She gave him a half glance, and moved with purpose. There was nothing left but to free the man of his burden.

Leviticus followed Traveanduri as they moved to intercept the cage and its captor.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

About twenty minutes passed without a hitch. No quarrels, no hassling guards, it seemed to easy. And then they understood why.

A small fort existed near the Eastern Bridge, just off of the main path. Hanging from the strong branches of the Ardenthor's Core, several scalambs hung near the bridge, reminding citizens of what happens to wrong-doers. One scalamb had a skeleton of a long dead Sky Elf in it, the only reason one could tell was because of the wing bones barely hanging from the body out of the side of the cage. Another scalamb was busted in to, strange beast marks lining the bars and several either mangled or missing. What kind of message was Ardenvaal trying to convey with such heretical showings of brutality?

The fort itself was one not of magic, but of hard labor. Trees were obviously cut down and shaped, processed into lumber from the timber they once were. It looked foreign in this place of beauty, something man-made in a world that was not to be tainted by such hands. Yet, Sky Elves roamed the perimeter, two stood guard at the entrance, and others were on small look-out towers that they could easily see great distances from.

Imulin and Ryu moved towards the bridge, one of them familiar with the sight and the other taken aback a little from the foreign architecture of such a natural and organic city. Imulin said it wasn't good if one stopped or stared by the fort, as suspicion would arise, so they moved across the massive bridge that spanned a couple hundred feet over to the next Ardenthor.

Not too far behind them, Traveanduri and Leviticus also came to the same juncture, and watched as the Sky Elf Guard moved the Scalamb on to one of the forged hooks that would hoist the prison above the edge of the Ardenthor. If one had eyes like an elf, the best vantage point would be from high above, in the Core canopy, or on another Ardenthor across from the fort.

Traveanduri and Leviticus moved across the bridge, both used to the familiar patrol of the guards and how to not act suspicious in their presence.

By happenstance, Imulin and Ryu bumped into Traveanduri and Leviticus on the other side as they both moved to positions where they could get a better look of the situation.

"You again? Strange that you should be following the prisoner. What's your issue with the man in the Scalamb," Traveanduri asked Imulin, passing a gaze at the Sky Elf's wings. Traveanduri suddenly had a sneaking suspicion of the Sky Elf.

She was about to say something, else, but there was a sudden tranquility amongst the small group. The sun, high in the sky, cast its rays down at just a slight vertical angle, onto the fort and the Scalamb getting lowered into the depths of the Waterglades. Nonetheless, the massive Ardenthors really stood out at this particular moment, where the Core's canopy could not block out the Sun. A wall of wood, easily a mile wide, if not more, stood before them, a tribute to what the Sky Elves belonged to. Another Ardenthor, shorter than the one they were on, was off in the northern distance, it's massive canopy catching the sun's doleful rays, creating life with them. And beyond that, further Ardenthors, growing hazier in the tropical weather the farther they got away. Traveanduri looked, and so did the others. The size of the trees absolutely dwarfed the Sky Elves, and it put the group in its place. Traveanduri was overwhelmed with peace, love, and overtaken by the beauty of this wonderful forest. She looked to Imulin again.

"I fight to protect the sanctity of this place, what it stands for. And the information that the Sky Elf has in that Scalamb over there could be vital to bringing the reign of Sek'Thelia to an end. They probably don't know what he is yet, otherwise, they probably would've put him to death," Traveanduri continued, the last sentence more to herself than to Imulin. "What do you fight for? What is your purpose with the elf in that cage? For any of you? What does freedom mean to you?"

Traveanduri looked to the fort at the edge of the Ardenthor, and looked to the small cage lowering into a cloudy underworld. She spoke again, her eyes starting to well up with wetness. A thought of Gaeddeon crossed her mind, of the way Sek'Thelia ended his life.

"Will you help me? Will you help the Resistance?"

Imilun breaths sharply. "Noo..." He trials off, gazing at the wreckage of forest in front of him. Then he jerks himself awake.

"Yes, I will fight for an end to this. Sek'Thalia is a blight, corrupting the very forest that we love. Let us end this, once and for all!"
