Survival Horror/Silent Hill Rant

Quite possibly one of the few game genres that is slowly dying out.

When Survival horror games came out, they had many common elements:
1. Creepy music/White Noise
2. Monsters come flying through windows when you least expect it...But you know it's coming.
3. A bunch of guns that really take out the scary of the game.
4. Survival isn't really there, it's more like, trying to not to get hit.
5. BAD DIALOGUE! WOO!

Now, Resident Evil and Overblood had these elements, and Overblood bombed after 2 games, Resident Evil kept the same formulas for over 5 games now, and that's getting freakin' stale.

Silent Hill, however, makes an attempt to make survival horror genre more horror based and not so much on survival, and it worked...almost. Y'see, Silent hill was scary and more plot based with more religous tones and awesome enemies. However, the first 3 Silent Hill games kept the formula fresh, but then Team Silent wanted to try something new, the end product was Silent hill 4: the Room, which sucked because it dropped the same formula as the previous 3 games and went more for an action-adventure style with not as many scary moments...

Of course, this does not compare to the piece of CRAP that is known as Silent hill: Homecoming, the perfect example of how Japanese games should not be made by American companies that try to reuse every good thing from the past games into one game (Like Pyramid Head, real-time transitions from real world to the Otherworld, recycled nurse enemies, etc.)

...Yeah, I'm done ranting.

stalker was an amazingly scary survival horror, it was just buggy as hell. I never really liked the whole 3rd person horror game thing.

Personally, I want to play Dead Rising before its impending sequel. ( I WILL NOT BE INDIGNIFIED BY A LOW-QUALITY Wii PORT AGAIN DAMMIT!) I think L4D was lost before it was released by ValVe (Re-used concept). IMO Silent Hill has an overall Creepy feel to it what with the abysmal Fog (or is it ashy haze?). Seriously, if you want a classic shooter/survival-horror Half-life 1 or It's Impending Re-make; Black Mesa are good choices.

Half-life 1 had some sweet scares and L4D had awesome zombies (the only positive I have).

Dead Rising gave you a real sense of survival, which rocked.

Survival to me sort of means that you have to watch how you use your ammo and such, so that sorta takes hl1 off the list since half of the time you're just running around with the science gun blowing up marines.
Dead rising is too lighthearted and wacky to be a horror or a survival game, its just a zombie game.

stalker is about the Chernobyl meltdown, but the meltdown was like 20 times worse and made shit go all freaky.

Yes, you're right about Dead Rising's main story mode, but I like the Infinite mode where you have to eat to stay alive and constantly fight for your life...while Zombie killing.

And Survival games to me need to have decreasing HP overtime, limited resources (And I mean LIMITED), and a lot of things ready to kill you.

I'll have to say that left 4 dead is the pinnacle of multiplayer survival games. Probably since you have to survive to win. Though theres a new game comming out called I Am Alive, which looks pretty good.
