Early picture of the car just before my brother sold it - around 1997

Posted Image

My first ever 'L' Plate drive was in this car - down to Lurgan, Moira, Old Lisburn road - thought i was the man in round the twisty bits at the burn house etc.... and then drove over a dead badger on the way back by mistake - i still laugh at that.... mum shouting "go round it" too late!! lol

But then as the miles were high and i wasn't as in to vw back then as now, it was sold on for something fresher....

Then many years later spotted an add in local paper which sounded like our car - resulting in quick foray deep into south armagh....
And there in a mushroom house was the 1300 Driver all snug - so my bro bought it back and this is how it looked in late 2002

Posted Image

Then after a bit of negotiation i bought it off my brother and started what was only to be a minor restoration..... lol

Stripping it down – resting on axle stands before the jig was made.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Engine bay was absolutely stinkin with waste oil and general dirt etc

Posted Image

Posted Image

Shocks etc removed and steering/braking equipment

Posted Image

But as you can see the waste oil did a great job of protecting the metal and when I wiped it away in various places it was clean blue steel underneath!

Posted Image

Then after jig making it was outside for a proper look!

Posted Image

Posted Image

Think we need a power washer! Which was then hired and a few hours spent removing the oil and wax etc

Posted Image

Then back inside for cleaning up inside
Posted Image

Made a jig for car and stripped everything down

Posted Image

Able to turn car on its side to see what floor is like and get rid of 21 years of waste oil protection!

Posted Image

Floor pan after 90'c power wash and removal of shutz - also back panel partly removed as it was bad in places also to gain access to back of wheel well

Posted Image

Inner front wing stripped - came up like new!

Posted Imageneed new inner guards at the rear new outer arch repairs

needed new back panel - got a small light genuine panel :)

Got genuine wings as edges were ragged and genuine bonnett old one was denty n stuff

Some surgery needed on the rear arches inner and outer as usual with the mk1!

Posted Image

Old inner removed

Posted Image

New inner installed
Posted Image

Trial fitting genuine wings and bonnet – great fit!

Posted Image

mount removal and welding of scirrocco mount
Posted Image

New inner passenger rear arch

Posted Image

Inner arches are easy to remove so if your doing a resto and your arch lips are rusty best to remove whole 1/2 inner and replace with the replacement from Hadrian....

Engine bay primed up

Posted Image

Whole car primed.... check out my genuine small light rear panel - picked up for 30 quid! 8)

Posted Image

Here is the underside all sprayed up and lookin shiny! well chuffed with the way it turned out. Colour is BMW Sterling Grey - I had to choose a subtle colour that wouldn't age quickly as I intend to hang on to the car and don't want to be respraying in years to come! Once is enuff [LOL]

Got my tank re done.. had heard bad stories about pattern tanks and as my one was rusty inside I took it to a firm who make rads and renew petrol tanks.. they cut four wee square holes around the tank, blasted it and resealed the holes then poured in sealer which coated the tank then they put a protective coating on the outside - fit and forget now hopefully! [:D]

Posted Image

My rear axle - all blasted, zinc'd and painted black with new roll bar bushes and new internals in the hubs

Posted Image

Posted Image

Inner wings after stripping, epoxy mastic, light stone guard and piant/laquer

Valver engine in bits

Finished refurbing the linkage last night - just stripped it down gave it a good clean - sanded the factory paint and painted it again - cleaned up the wee brackets that hold the rod and painted them and ordered new wee felt seals to keep it workin sweet. Got a 16v servo so buffed it down to the steel as they seem to rust on the underside - then just painted it up...

BTW to do this conversion you need to reduce the length of the threaded bit on the end of the servo and also use the mounting plate that you find sanwiched between the 16v golf bulkhead and servo - this gives the extra few mills of adjustment... quite easy really just have to order up a master cylinder - spose euro cp will be best???

I took the block round to mates car wash place and used the hot power washer and degreaser on the block...

Then took it home and buffed it with the wire brush on the grinder - came up tops!

Before:

After:

Then got out the trusty zingazolve and gave it a coat! Rust free block for years to come! Have to give it an enamel coat of black now..

Posted Image

More done so a few more pics

Took apart the pedal box - cleaned and painted the pedals put on new pedal pads and painted the column
Posted Image

Took the hubs apart - got the rust off then zinc'd them and then painted them also new bearings and modded the back plates (can you spot the mod) so they can be taken off without having to split the hubs:)

Posted Image

Then got the GPC gear linkage repair kit - best £2 you could spend! Stripped the whole linkage and painted/laquered it all and then replaced the bushings, new protective boot and new heat shield.
Posted Image

The gearbox was lookin well sad so off to the car wash! sprayed it with degreaser and took into it with the hot washer - good results just need the wee bits of oxidisation removed -

This just became my favourite topic.

I cannot wait to see this one one the pipe!

Lovely colour, and amazing attention to detail - you could go professional at this mate!

Is this a race between you an Edd to see who's is finished first perhaps? :D
Cheers

Forgot to post pic of manifold I got from Rowland Manifolds in South Africa couple of months back. I had the mangoletsi one that came supplied with the carbs kit but after some research and advice it appeared that it was basically rubbish as the curve was too abrupt and the air/fuel mix basically hit a vertical face after exit the carb body before entering the head...

New one is top quality and was cheaper even with shipping than the mangoletsi version - on this one the curve is twice the length and far smoother - should make for good power in my STANDARD engine. :D
