Dawn of The Mín The Han had lasted for what some say is four hundred years, only once interrupted by Wang Mang, for a mere 14 years. It was the Han dynasty that expanded the empire far west, and established the silk road. It was the Han dynasty which had bolstered the economy of the land, extended the great wall, and freed the land from the troubles of warfare. The days of Han Gaozu's grand reign has long waned. Now, the weak emperor is controlled by eunuchs, while the empire writhes in pain from deteriorating borders, escalating infighting, soaring taxes, and natural disasters. It had become evident that the glory days of the Han were over, and for many, that it was time for a new dynasty. Zhang Jiao sought to free the people of their troubles, and deliver them to a heaven upon earth. He and his brothers turned out to be the final spark that lit the flame of rebellious intent. Soon the citizens of Pu Yang, Chen Liu, Nan Pi, Ping Yuan, and small towns across the empire rose like a roaring flame, fueled by passion and fervor, to aid the rebellion. Soon, Zhang Jiao commanded over three hundreds thousand men. The brothers emboldened their followers with displays of magic, the Turban rebellion was more than a simple plot to usurp control of the capitol, and instate a new emperor. It was a movement of ferocity and change. Emperor Ling of the Han, distraught, gave powers to He Jin, the new grand commander. He Jin mobilized Cao Cao and Huangfu Song to suppress the rebellion in the central plains. He mobilized Lu Zhi and Yuan Shao to defend Ye from the surrounding armies. He attempted to pincer the turbans by ordering Zhu Jun to strike the turbans down by mobilizing from the Qing province. The Turbans outnumbered their foe 2 to 1 but, their armies were little more than mobs of armed peasantry. The soldiers of the Han were not the pinnacle of skill and strength, but these men had at least some formal knowledge of warfare. Zhang Jiao had not come this far to be vanquished. He ordered his brother, Zhang Liang, to march on Ye. He ordered Zhang Bao to strike down Cao Cao's forces. Finally, he himself sought to push through Huangfu Song's forces and take Luo Yang. Zhang Liang broke Ye and all its residents after a brutal siege. He did not occupy the shattered stronghold, as he lacked the funds to repair it. Instead, he moved back to Pu Yang to help the cause in the central plains. Zhang Bao smashed Coa Cao's forces, causing Cao Cao's own cousin, Xiahou Dun, to die. The vanquished Cao Cao fled to Ye, a broken lord presiding over a broken city. Huangfu Songs forces saw defeat in Xu Chang. Soon after, Luo Yang was captured with ease, as few were prepared for the quick assaults and attacks of the Turbans. The court retreated to Wan, only to find that the citizens of the city had betrayed the Han. As the entire Han court perished, the capitol christened a new emperor, and a new dynasty. The Han had finally collapsed. In its wake, the Mín dynasty rises! Many Han retainers fled to Ji to fight alongside Liu Yan, many of Yuan Shao's personal retainers sought to support his childhood friend, Cao Cao. Now, Liu Yan, Cao Cao, Sun Jian, and Ma Teng stood as the only remnant of the Han dynasty. The Yellow Turbans delivered the finishing blow to the Han dynasty, but, our story does not end here my friends. For, it does not matter how many successes you have earned, but how you utilize these victories. It is January 185 |
