speaking with a retired operating theatre nurse this morning she told me that surgeons or anaethatists do not always abide by nursing rules. My understanding of the nurse who was refused stated that it was not a matter of health and safety (she had been wearing it for 30 yrs) but that a new uniform had been issued and the ban came in then, so it was a dress issue rather than hygiene. I understand that nurses may wear rings or earings! |

Rings and jewellery are removed in theatre because of the risk of them slipping of and falling into the wound. In the RAF personnel working on machinery remove rings because there is risk of them getting caught in machinery and the same is true of necklaces chains and other jewellery. If one wears a crucifix, as I have done every day, it is out of sight in uniform not because of anti-religious rules but because while safely under my shirt it will not dangle into machinery. These rules are about safety not religion. I agree with Rose and others, the true way to reveal ones Christian belief is by living ones life in the way of Christ, we do not need baubles and phylacteries and anyone in the forces who demanded that as a Christian they have a right to wear a piece of Jewellery to show they are Christian is mistaken, their is no requirement it is a matter of personal choice, and when it comes to Health and Safety I am of the opinion that an employer would be irresponsible if they did not take appropriate precautions to avoid accidents. If someone demands the "Right" to wear a particular item that is contrary to the safety protocols then they should be required to sign a legally binding disclaimer to ensure that they can not later sue the employer if they have an accident contributed to by the offending item. I certainly believe a patient should be able to sue a nurse or doctor if it is discovered that a piece of jewellery accidentally finds its way into their internal organs. (In case anyone was wondering the crucifix I wear was a gift and I wear it close to my heart not to prove I am Christian but as a personal reminder of the person who gave it to me, it is under my vest and seen on rare occasions when I am in the gym) Edited by Penfold, Thursday, 17. I have a lapel pin crucifix worn by grandfather in Britain in the 1920s. I wear it on special occasions. It is a delight carrying with it so much history as well as its primary religious significance. I don't wear it at work at the moment for fear of losing it however if anyone wanted me to sign a disclaimer for wearing this or any other religious emblem at work I would refuse. Oremus Let us pray CARLO
