I think he was an honorable man, he was not aware why Christ had been brought before him and democratically informed the people that he found no fault in him and washed his hands of the matter, leaving them to decide on the outcome. He carried out the law as proscribed at that time. Where is he now? In purgatory, heaven or hell. I believe he is in heaven and was selected by God to perform the role in this way. |

Jesus had not broken Roman law, that is why Pilate handed him over for trial according to Jewish law. Pilate's eternal destination would be determined according to the state of his soul at death. That would not depend solely on his actions and motives at the trial of Jesus. Only God has the means of knowing what he did, right or wrong, in his private life, or whether he had committed serious sins and died refusing to repent. God alone can judge the state of a person's soul. |

Pilate was not a church member, surely in catholic teaching he cannot therefore be saved? |

Paul, I believe Heaven will be full of Christians and non-Christians. God will judge everyone according to his/her knowledge and experience and way of life. Whether they go via Purgatory will be up to God's Judgement. Catholics, of course, can avoid Purgatory if they perform some kind of Penance (including prayer) or fulfil specific Indulgences. I do not believe it is necessary to be a Catholic to go to Heaven and, very sadly, some Catholics may go to Hell! Obviously God will also accept the Penance of non-Catholics. |

I think there is a reference in one of the Gospels to people 'whose blood Pilate mingled with that of their sacrifices' which may implicate him in what we would now view as a war crime |

I knew this topic rang a bell, I had a feeling we had a similar discussion before. Paul, you now suggest (mistakenly) that only Catholics can be saved. How come you have changed your mind? Topic - St. Pontius Pillate

Even in Pilate was a war criminal, that would not bar his entry into Heaven if he repented. God's forgiveness is always available to people who are truly sorry for their sins, however serious. |

Rose are you suggesting that when we arrive at the pearly gates provided we repent the gates will be opened? |

I can not speak for Rose but the basis of Christian teaching is that all people may be saved if they repent. There is no time scale quoted by Christ all he asks is that when called to account. If we repent before that moment comes then the Kingdom of God is open to us, if we repent after that moment then the Lord alone will judge if we repented in time. Personally I prefer to work on the basis of best to be prepared than leave things to the last minute. |

I agree with all the Penfold said in his post, made 17 minutes ago. I did not say that every person who repents goes to Heaven immediately after death. If you want to know about the Catholic Church's teaching about Purgatory help is at hand in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_P2N.HTM#6 |

CONSCIENCE This was not to be your day Wife up the previous night Keeping you awake “Hallucinations” You groaned hard heartedly Then the whining red faced priests With their wagging fingers And trumped up charges Against the Galilean A harmless kind of dreamer And despite his insolence You felt only pity Had no stomach for it The mob’s hypocrisy Begging to free a brigand But later grown weary Tired and intimidated You plunged both hands deeply Into the bowl’s cold water Washing away all conscience (c)CARLO.2012 |

The jewish histoian Josephus describes pontius pilate as a greedy and ruthless prefect who had little regard for the local jewish population and their religious practices. |
