It was, of course, at best, some kind of metaphor, at worst, nonsense.

I hope you weren't always taught that. Surely when you went to big school they taught you better.
I was taught nothing about Purgatory in 'big school' as it was not a Catholic big school and therefore ignored the subject.

You are almost certainly right about the use of metaphor. Obviously made an impresison though!

I was always taught that there are flames in Purgatory but they are not as hot as the flames in hell!
I gather your school did not teach from the Penny Catechism!

It did but it was the sixpenny catechism in my time

There is also a newer, much bigger catechism.

I know. It is on the bookshelf before me.
