Lourdes: pilgrims evacuated as floods swamp shrine

The Sanctuary at Lourdes was closed today and hundreds of pilgrims have been evacuated after non-stop rain caused the River Gave to burst its banks in what has been described as the worst flooding in 25 years.

This afternoon the water was around one metre deep in front of the Grotto. Only the higher basilica is still accessible. Nearby roads are under up to 80cms of water. Two campsites have been evacuated and hotels near the Domaine have been closed with guests moved to accommodation on higher ground in town.

Fr Thierry Castillo, custodian of the sanctuaries said: "There are torrents of mud. The space in front of the grotto is entirely covered with water, the altar is under water."

He said the hydroelectric plant which provides power to the sanctuaries, has been badly damaged by floating tree trunks.

The Gave de Pau was three metres above its usual level this morning (Saturday) and still rising, as weather forecasters predicted that the rain that has been falling non-stop since Thursday would continue until Sunday. A heavy downpour is forecast for Saturday evening and night.

The Domain is not expected to reopen before Tuesday or Wednesday.

If you go to:

www.lourdes-france.org

You will see the webcam facing the Grotto with the very fast stream of flood water in front of it. All events have been cancelled for today and tomorrow.

The floods looks horrendous.

You-tube video of floods.

The grotto began with a miraculous spring of water. Another miracle would come in handy right now, to dry up the excess water from the nearby river.

Comparing the You-tube vdeo with the picture on the Lourdes Website it apears to me the level of the floodwater has gone down a little.

From French sources the River Gave started to ebb during the early hours of this (Sunday) morning and is leaving a lot of debris and mud everywhere - even within the Grotto itself. I can well understand it may be at least Wednesday before they can hold ceremonies. Many of the shops, cafes and hotels may be closed for several days.

From the Lourdes tv website it apears everything is now normal or near normal in the Grotto area and some events are taking place. The people must have worked very hard because there was a lot of mud and debris to clear.

Since floods are an act of God, I was wondering if they are a Divine objection to JPII's relics being there?

The only person able to tell you is God. Insurers class floods as Acts of God. Who has known the mind of God? Insurance brokers? Angus Toanimo? Financial Services Authority?

I'm pretty sure the Great Flood was an act of God. No insurance companies around then?

People are now walking about in the grotto. They can be seen via the web-cam transmission.
