Vatican City, Nov 27, 2009 / 12:18 am (CNA).- From November 29th to December 7th a novena dedicated to the Immaculate Mother will be led by nine cardinals in Rome. The tradition has a long history at the Basilica dei Santi XII Apostoli.

The nine days of prayer will be observed in the Roman Basilica dei Santi XII Apostoli (The Holy Twelve Apostles), with each of the nine cardinals officiating ceremonies on separate days. For the sake of continuity, the homily is given by same person for the entirety of the novena. This year, Monsignor Stefano De Fiores from the Marian Theological Faculty will be the homilist.

According to today's news release from Italy's Religious Information Services, this practice of Marian devotion has been observed in this church since the 15th Century. The tradition of celebrating the 8th of December in veneration of the Immaculate Conception was introduced to the Basilica by Franciscans in the mid-1400's and later, by order of Pope Sixtus IV, they were given official license to observe the date 'with great solemnity.'

The tradition of the novena grew from there.
Popes have often taken part in the Marian observance, however, there has been no word as to whether Pope Benedict XVI will make an appearance at the Basilica this year.

Thank you for the novenas. I hadn't come across them before.

This special day is extra special for me as it is the anniversary of my first Holy Communion.

God bless the person who chose that day for me.

Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Bedford
Procession of Faith

During September, the Bedford pastoral area, on behalf of the Northampton Diocese will be privileged to host the visit of the Miraculous Relic Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe during its Novena Tour.
The original Miraculous Image, dating from 1531, is protected at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico. The Missionary replica, which has touched the original, has been blessed by the Archbishop Rector of the basilica.
It has journeyed throughout the world and we in Bedford form part of a world wide chain of Prayer for promoting the cause of the Gospel of Life, protection of the unborn, the sanctity of families and the home, and the peace of nations

The Miraculous Image will be in the church of the Holy Child and St Joseph most days for silent prayer and adoration. Remember, too, the Diocesan Solemn Mass of Our Lady of Guadalupe, celebrated by Bishop Peter on September 13th.
Unfortunately I can't find any further informaton via the Northampton Diocese website but more may be posted there nearer to the event.

Bishop Mark Davies, newly installed Bishop of Shrewsbury is to call Shrewsbury diocese to a year of prayer with Mary, starting on December 8
Quote:

In his first pastoral letter, he wrote: “Our Lady will show us through every changing scene and circumstance that same path of faithfulness, as she said, ‘let it be to me according to your word’. She will help us now to see all that God’s grace makes possible.”

The Pastoral Letter can be read at
Shrewsbury Diocese

I really hope that all dioceses will take up this initiative
