As so often, I bought and read the book.

I sent The Lady a brief email saying "Thanks. I am impressed".

A reply came ffrom an i-phone, timed 11 pm.
.......... .......... .......... ...........
"Thank you Mrs (name). If you would be so kind as to reply with your address I will gladly send you a current issue of The Lady.
.......... .......... .......... ...........
It may be that taking up matters privately is more effective than complaining to the media.
I am now the proud possessor of three issues of The Lady, a terribly terribly posh magazines which provides terribly terribly thought provoking articles for the information and recreation of terribly terribly ladies discerning ladies.

....... ....... ....... ....... ....... .......

What story does that tell???

It tells that raising concerns is indeed beneficial to a terribly terribly posh forum member.

On a more serious note, I do not think crude adverts would impress the readership of The Lady Magazine. They might well be better off without it.

"Wouldn't it be truly power to the people if every church in the land made mention of the offending ad in their weekly newsletter and encouraged parishoners not to buy the product advertised."

Most effective Peter.

Down to the Bishops!

PJD
I would suggest the responsibility is also:

Down to the forums!
Down to all Catholics, lay or clerical!
Down to every individual Christian!

We need not wait for our bishops, but they could have helped spread awareness of these adverts. They have websites, diocesan newspapers and secretaries.

The Advertising Standards Agency has published its adjudication.

http://asa.org.uk/Complaints-and-ASA-action/Adjudications/2010/9/Antonio-Federici/TF_ADJ_49041.aspx

They have ruled that the ad must not appear again in its current form.

Only ten complaints were received. At least four were from members of Catholic Cyberforum. If Josephine had not posted on here, there may only have been six, so it is likely we had some influence. Dare I say "Lay power won the day"? :wh:

What a wonderful achievement for this forum and in particular for Josephine, who alerted us.

The ruling is that the advert of the pregnant nun must not appear again in its current form. A similar advert by the same firm was banned last year. They changed it a little, and used it again in slightly different form.

Now they are planning to plaster a similar advert, not quite the same, on billboards near Westminster Abbey, where Pope Benedict and the Archbishop of Canterbury will pray before Mass is said at Westminster Cathedral on Saturday..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11300552

Antonio Federici, the ice cream manufacturer, has not year revealed what image will be portrayed in the new advert, but they say that it would be "a continuation of the theme".

Quote:

A spokeswoman for the company said the new image intended to "defy" the ban from the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

She added: "We are in the process of securing a series of billboards close to and along the planned route of the Pope's cavalcade around Westminster Cathedral".

I suggest we Cyberforum members teach them that they cannot treat Catholics in this manner. Lets all make our complaints when we have evidence the new posters are offensive, and lets rope in support from family and parishioners.

To complain
First read this
http://www.asa.org.uk/Regulation-Explained/What-we-cover.aspx

then complete and submit the online complaint form

I can't think of any billboards within a mile of Westminster Abbey, though I daresay there may be some somewhere.

I can't think of any billboards within a mile of Westminster Abbey, though I daresay there may be some somewhere.
According to The Independent:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/advertising/ice-cream-firm-antonio-federici--vows-to-defy-ban-on-pregnant-nun-advert-2079814.html

Quote:

A spokeswoman for Antonio Federici said the company intended to defy the ban by publishing another advert portraying "a continuation of the theme".

She said: "We intend to defy the ASA's ban and will publish another advert from the series before the Pope's visit later this week.

"We are in the process of securing a series of billboards close to and along the planned route of the Pope's cavalcade around Westminster Cathedral."

The ASA said its rulings "must be followed".

A spokesman said: "ASA rulings must be followed and we are taking steps to ensure Antonio Federici do so.

"We do not comment on the likely compliance of ads that have not yet appeared. However, we are continuing to conduct work behind the scenes, including with the advertiser, to ensure they comply with the rules."

Quote:

Defending the banned ad, Antonio Federici said the idea of "conception" represented the development of their ice cream, and their use of religious imagery stemmed from their strong feelings towards their product.

The company said it also wished to "comment on and question, using satire and gentle humour, the relevance and hypocrisy of religion and the attitudes of the church to social issues".
I find the attitude of the advertisers very childish.
