Sky TV, Channel 138, will transmit a programme,"The God Delusion" at 9 pm tonight. Sorry about the short notice. It ends at 11:05.

A friend who is an agnostic has been asking me questions about morality and belief. He is watching it, so am I. Hopefully it will lead to some interesting conversations with my friend.

Richard Dawkins has opened by telling the listeners about faith, distorted minds, killing for God, the process of non-thinking called Faith.

Already I have decided I do not like this man, he attacks. I would be happy with him exercising his right to express an opinion, but I am wondering if he is inciting religious hatred.

I don't think he is that bad Rose; just confused. Have always thought that he will change his opinions before he dies. We pray so.

In a sense he is swimming towards a change of suit; for underneath isn't an athiest really a kind of deist.

Although he talks nonsense it does sell books!

Richard Dawkins showed plenty of footage of activities of people of various faiths, and interviews with muslims, Jews and Christians. He must have made quite an effort to find so many exremists. Shame he did not think to have a chat with ordinary people who attend their local C of E parish churches, nonconformist chapels, or go to Mass. He was obviously trying to give the impression extremists are typical of believers in God.

If belief in God is a delusion that fools only by the gullible and brainwashed how come intelligent men like Pope Benedict got taken in?

I think Richard D wears his "professional" non-belief on his sleeve, like almost a badge of honour. If he's made his name as a professional atheist it must be difficult to reverse out of his cul-de-sac without losing face. It's difficult, almost impossible to get to the bottom of what motivates any of us but perhaps Richard, as he nears the end of his life has become aware of the reality of God and is frightened that he might just have been on the wrong road for most of his life. If that is the case maybe anger is the cause and reason for the creation of this programme and his other extreme opinions. This could also be one of the reasons why he wants to see the Pope arrested in September when he visits these shores.

I know many people who regard religion with contempt and dismissal - they see just how much evil it seems to involve, and they want none of it.

There was once a bloke preaching peace, turn the other cheek an' all that stuff. His number 2 cut some guy's ear off when 'the Boss'. was threatened
2000 years later, you only have to look at Northern Ireland's history - or even its present!!! - to see two rival sets of supporters of that man of love and peace, each with its own 'authentic' version... and each equally eager to blow the other lot to smithereens.

Some of my best friends say the nastiest folk they know are all church-goers, and some of the nicest they know wouldn't set foot inside a church: conclusion... religion is rubbish.
That's what they experience with their own eyes... and we wonder why people don't go to church any more!

I understand where Dawkins is coming from (I did see that programme by chance last evening) - I just disagree with Dawkins' conclusions.

Anne Marie, re your quote "Some of my best friends say the nastiest folk etc..........."

Sadly you're quite right. Wasn't it Gandhi who said the worst thing about Christianity was Christians?

If there were no God, there would be no atheists.

(I think GK Chesterton said something like that.)

I am watching it now. He talked to some quite ordinary Catholics at Lourdes. He then looked at Ted Haggard, who is a very influential Fundamentalist, and, I think representative of many Christians, especially in the US. I think he raises in on the whole a measured way questions which we must be prepared to answer.

Note: think Catholic - think Lourdes (a reference to my post in the "Back to the Future" thread.

One youngish Priest I know from time to time brings a copy of one of Dawkin's books into the pulpit and gives it a good seeing to as part of his sermon!

I just love that!

Good man!
