Here is an interesting site that lists famous or at least well known Catholics.

I haven't read every bit in detail so I hope it is ok to post it. Seems harmless.

Amazed to see that Bob Hope, Jimmy Cagney and no less than 3 of the Beatles are included! Less staggered to learn that many Popes were Catholic !! :bl:

The long list at the bottom is the most interesting bit - don't miss it!

Enjoy.

I knew Cagney was.

I didn't think Graham Greene was an atheist.

It must be my sad nature but I really love lists of things. Give me a copy of the Catholic Directory or the local diocesan ones and I'll spend many an afternoon going through them!!

I have copies of my Diocesan directory on the shelf before me going back to 1990 !

One can't beat a good list to relax with!

I was shocked to read in a lawyer's biography recently that Peter Sutcliffe 'The Yorkshire Ripper' was a 'devout Catholic' at the time of his imprisonment. For all I know he still may be.

One of the links gives this information:
Top 20 Nations with
Highest Percentage of Catholics

Nation Vatican City

Number of Catholics 850

Percent of
population
that are
baptized
Catholics
Vatican City 100.00%

Surprise, surprise! What fun Ian Paisely could have if he lived there.

The table does not give percentage Mass attendance.

It can be disheartening to learn who should have been, or is not, a practising Catholic - or should I say Roman Catholic, to avoid any confusion. The only secular newspaper I regularly read (apart from a weekly local area newspaper) is The Sunday Times. There are often interviews with or articles about celebrities who originate from Catholic families. This of course is not the main topic but a casual comment is enough to reveal lapsation and occasional disagreement with the Church's teaching on a subject. I'm afraid, contrary to Rose's experience, there are plenty of women, Catholic and non-Catholic, who were educated in convent schools and whose lives are not what the schools would be proud of. I don't want to mention names, but occasionally a young Catholic makes his or her name in the entertainment world and we are proud of him/her because he/she is a Catholic ... then sadly he/she goes 'off the rails'. This is by no means a post V2 phenonemon. Perhaps it is often well that we don't encourage the propogation of information that celebrities were/are not practising Catholics. By celebrities I include politicians and their families as well as other professions not just entertainers. On the positive side I have occasionally read, with pleasant surprise, of celebrities who have made the effort to attend Holy Mass wherever they were.

We can of course include them in our 'Prayers for others'.

The sad thing Derekap is that sometimes (perhaps often) this is because their marriage broke down at an early age - which may or may not have been their fault or their partners come to that - and thus being in the public eye and well up on the professional ladder, plentry of money and attention, it is not unsurprising that some souls could not face the prospect of living a celebate life.

When I registered on Friends ReUnited a few old friends got in touch. Most volunteered the information that they had given up practising their faith, soon after leaving school. Most of those girls would go into the school chapel some lunchtimes, voluntarily, to pray. Something led to them abandoning their faith. Let none blame Vatican 2, they were all mature adults when it started.

The Vatican could not allow him to live there. It would upset the statistics :tc:

CARLO, did the author have sufficient involvement with the case to be certain Sucliffe was a Catholic? It is the first I have heard of it. A relative of mine reported that case for BBC, and did mention a religious element to the dismemberment, too gruesome to mention.

Does the author understand the meaning of "devout" or does he fall into the usual trap of labelling all who were baptised as Catholics, "devout"? The media used to report that Camilla Parker Bowles was a devout Catholic, but she never was.

According to one website Peter Sutcliffe's mother was a Catholic.

The information came from a biography of the late George Carman QC written by his son.

No Ordinary Man: A Life of George Carman
by Dominic Carman

Carman was involved in a case concerning Sutcliffe's wife. It was quite high profile at the time. It is only a passing reference and I no longer have a copy of the book but I only read it recently so my recollection of the contents is quite good.
