The Telegraph has a long standing tradition of speculating, peppering announcements with phrases such as "according to a source", and "It is understood."
An interview with Anne Widdecome will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 programme, Analysis, on Monday 28 June. What does our Ambassador to the Vatican actually do? |

Had it been nonsense, Ann would have said so in few words - so I guess it is true!
The same as any ambassador, I guess. What DO ambassadors actually do? |

I don't think that's unique to the Telegraph! |

An ambassador to the Vatican does business with the movers and shakers away from the common gaze. Here is the Holy Father receiving an ambassador (Not Anne!). ![]() Veritas CARLO Edited by CARLO, Monday, 28. June 2010, 19:17.

I think Anne Widdecombe would make a very good Ambassador to the Vatican. She is eminently well qualified. She would be missed here though. |

What's wrong with the one we've got? Very nice young man, comes from my family's home town, educated by a very good friend of mine. I don't agree with all this changing of personnel just because you disagree with the politics of the person who appointed them. Anne Widdecombe would not be a good choice - far too blustery! |

Francis Campbell has been Ambassador to the Vatican longer than any of his predecessors - five years as opposed to the usual three or four. |

Definition of an ambassador, is some one who lies for their country. Sorry but this is not original. |

Anne Widdecombe is no mealy-mouthed politician, she tells it straight, does not beat about the bush. Some take it as rudeness, I would call it honesty. I wonder if her personal experience of the Church of England could have some bearing on her selection as Ambassador? She is a convert from the C of E. |

I think it is very wrong to consider Ann Widdicombe for the position of ambassador to the Vatican or anywhere else for that matter. We have in our civil service Diplomatic Corp excellent men and women who have spent many years learning and honeing their skills who would admirably fulfill the role. Indeed they would have far greater experience for the role than a retired politician. |

I think they just want to shuffle her off somewhere out of the way. |

I think Ann, having left Westminster for sleepy laid-back rural Devon, is looking to keep her occupied. Some people move for the "ideal rustic lifestyle" and miss the hustle and bustle of city life. |

Anne is a good example of what I have seen on a number of occasions, the convert becoming more Catholic than the Catholics

You missed the word "cradle", Mairtin, because converts are Catholics. It is quite possible for a convert to out-Catholic the cradle Catholics, though I don't think she quite does that. |
