Left Wing, Right Wing, moderate, extreme

On the altar the Gospel side was always on the left of the congregation and of the ad orientem celebrant

I don't think this was intended as a political statement.

So, there are right wing pro-lifers. So what? What is wrong with them, in particular? What are their erroneous "right wing" views?
Seeing that I was the one who referred to extreme right wingers and "pro-life" movements in the other thread, here are just a few examples:

  • Those who used abortion legislation as a rather transparent cloak for their racism when they were attacking Obama during the USA presidential election.

  • Those also in the USA who cheered the murder of Dr. George Tiller.

  • Those here in Ireland who financed a Roscommon mother's court action to oppose the Health Board in taking her children into care on the basis that parents have the primacy of rights in deciding how their children should be brought up; it turned out that, among other things, the mother was engaging in incest with her teenage son whilst her husband was raping their daughter.

To be fair to anyone's hurt feelings, of course, Martin (in his first response) is obviously not alone in realising that I was, indeed, pointing out the stupidity of such labelling - and Rose obviously registered my choice not to explore the other part of the topic:
moderate v. extreme.

I recall in my youth a wonderful philosophical case being made by Douglas (later Lord) Wade (yes, a Liberal) that you have moderate in the centre, but instead of wings at the extremes, the diagram should really show an oval, with Communism and Fascism meeting each other round the other side and being, in practice, all but indistinguishable.

I suppose 'moderate' could be generalised as maximum freedom to your own ideas/actions provide they don't inpinge on the freedom of others;
'Extreme' might be generalised as restricting freedom to rigid rules or allowing total freedom regardless of the effect on others.

But to return where we were... the idea that a particular view on many things is clearly right wing or left wing is ludicrous.
And I was aiming my humour at no particular person - you're all lovely really
What's more, I don't actually consider either Martin or Clare to be extreme - just having strong but different views...
Provided they don't get in MY way

The concept of right and left derives from the revolutionary National Assembly of 1789. Since it met in a tennis court, I conclude that if it is not a racket it is probably those other things you play tennis with.

Hey this could lead to a diversion about extremists' opinions about mens' singles, mens' doubles and mixed doubles.

Who used abortion legislation as a transparent cloak for racism? And who says racism is extremely right wing?

And what makes Tiller's killers' cheerleaders right wing?

And what has right wing-ness got to do with that Roscommon case?

This is all ridiculous of course ... Dismissing someone as right wing (or left wing) is not good enough.
In the other thread, you claimed
Quote:

Because the world has moved to the extreme left, that makes what was mainstream opinion a few decades ago "extreme right wing".

I'm glad you have seen the error of your ways :fire:
You appear to have missed the fact that, as I said, I only mentioned the left wing in response to your mentioning of the right wing.

This is all ridiculous of course. I just get fed up when a person or group of people is unthinkably described as "extreme modernist", as if nothing more needs to be said to condemn someone. And traditionalists are always extreme, and that is condemnable, whereas extreme lmodernists, well, they're just fine! In fact, they're not even extreme!

Dismissing someone as modernist (or traditionalist) is not good enough. It is lazy. And I only mention the modernists in response to others who believe that labelling someone "speaks for itself and is enough to condemn a person. It isn't.

So, there are left wing modernists. So what? What is wrong with them, in particular? What are their erroneous "left wing" views?
Rose, Modernism is a condemned heresy (or synthesis of all heresies). So Modernists, whether left or right wing, are not fine! They are heretics.

Yup, rightness or wrongness is what matters.

Stalin's regime was considered extreme Left Wing. Hitler's regime was considered extreme Right Wing. Both were evil.
