Not every parish has a website. Those that have vary from updated weekly, updated sometimes and a few appear to die a natural death. One I know is very artistic but it is over a year since it was updated.

Means of Communication

Quote:

(§1 In exercising their office the pastors of the Church, availing themselves of a right which belongs to the Church, are to make an ample use of the means of social communication.
§2 Pastors are also to teach the faithful that they have the duty of working together so that the use of the means of social communication may be imbued with a human and christian spirit.
§3 All Christ's faithful, especially those who in any way take part in the management or use of the media, are to be diligent in assisting pastoral action, so that the Church can more effectively exercise its office through these means.)

I like these two blogs:

http://st-simon-parish.blogspot.com/

Is a blog of a parish. It gives all the parish news of weddings, baptisms, First Communions,

South Ashford Priest is the "sister" site of the parish blog. On South Ashford Priest blog the pp talks to his parishioners, explaining all his decisions about the church building, and the liturgical reasons for some changes, and generally chats, to his own parishioners.

That is currently a very common (and in my view, pretty nasty) disease, Derek. It doesn't just apply to parishes either. A lot of local voluntary organisations, which includes parish communities of course, have enthusiastically set up web sites but then found that keeping them updated is a chore and that the only person who really has the skill doesn't have the time.
I had a site of my own for a while but took it down because I simply didn't have the time to do the updating needed and (IMHO) no site at all is better than one that is almost constantly out of date.
Perhaps the solution is for the diocesan website to include a page or two for each parish which can be used for news updates (changes to Mass times, weddings and baptisms, etc) If the parish really has someone who is keen then there is no reason not to set up their own web site and link in and out of the diocesan site.
I reckon we'll get there eventually but it does seem to be taking some time.
Of course we could remember that 15 years ago the word "internet" would have only elicited blank stares so maybe it's not taking all that long in the great scheme of things. We're just a bit impatient. Bit like most other people, really! :D

I happened to come across this posting on Orthfully Catholic a blog by a group of British seminarians. I hope they don't mind but I really thought this was worth sharing
Orthfully Catholic

The Memoria of the Coronation of Our Blessed Lady saw the end of the Legion of Mary's mission in my parish. I went out to help with their work and truly appreciated what they do for our parishes and how important it is to have a Praesidium. I worked with one of the Legionaries for 4 hours and we visted every home in two roads!
It was an incredible experience to knock on a door not knowing who or what was behind it, naturally for August most of the houses were empty but those who were in were very interesting. The non-Catholics and lapsed Catholics who weren't interested in coming home still found it a privilege to have a Seminarian on their doorstep, those who were interested in coming home were very happy to be visited and invited to Mass. I had a great day and am inspired to set up a Praesidium at the Seminary!
The week ended with Mass and a reception, both of which were very well attended and we were all treated to a Marian dance by our African parishioners.
Please keep the Legion in your prayers!

Does anyone know how to set up a blog. I mean is it easy if e.g. you are like myself - on pay as you go and not broadband.

PJD,

If you wish, you can take advantage of this forum's blog facility - please read the announcement I made earlier.

God bless,

Patrick.

I would give serious thought to broadband,PJD. It's much cheaper than PAYG and much faster. Unfortunately it means you can spend all your time browsing if you are not careful :D

I now have a blog, if anyone's interested! Actually I've had it for ages, but I spent a little while moving it to something more easily updated when not at home.

Link below :)

Thank you all for your advice.

Patrick: I have copied your link and will try it sometime.

As for PAYG - yes I don't want to be on the Internet all the time. Besides that I need a better Computer.

All I really wanted to do was to update my existing Website (you can read it on lower house) - but cannot do so because I no longer use that provider. Why it is still on there I really don't know. And I'm not interested in inter-dialogue on a personal blog - the forums are quite good enough and much more democratic.

Unfortunately PJD your old website is no longer available - probably due to the fact Orange have taken over Wanadoo.

For your information, though, PJD, even computers that run Windows 95 and have as low as 1GHz processors can run broadband. ;) I could build you a fairly decent system, by today's standards for about £164. :)

Thanks you for that information and your offer. I will think about it. You were quite correct - the old webside is no longer available. It was a few months ago. But there you go. No matter.

I followed your instructions re blog here. But couldn't exactly understand how you could upload my web text - I mean a space where you paste etc.

I need time to recover from shock.

An English Diocese has its own blog, with a facility for viewers' comments.

What next? If all our dioceses get into this two way communication mularky, they might all start answering letters and emails.

Lets hope other dioceses follow suit.

Arundel and Brighton blog

To be honest, I would have thought that that the diocese of Arundel and Brighton would have been one of the last to have a blog.... :wh:
