The Holy Father To Visit Britain

I have just read the BBC News Website and it says that the BBC understands the Pope will visit Britian in 2010.
Of course it could be rumour or misunderstanding. I can well understand he may find other countries have more priority, but we can we pray and hope it is right.

Pope Benedict XVI is to visit Britain next year in the first ever official visit by a pontiff.
The Holy See will announce soon the first papal visit to Britain since Pope John Paul II made a pastoral visit in 1982.
Timesonline
There is nothing as yet on the Vatican Information Service but it looks as if a formal announcement is imminent

Pope Benedict XVI is to come to the UK next year, it was reported today.

Neither the Catholic Church in Britain nor 10 Downing Street were today officially confirming the report, which is believed to have come from British officials travelling with Prime Minister Gordon Brown in New York.

But it is thought the trip will be announced shortly by the Vatican.

The last Papal visit would be wonderful and may encourage a growth in vocations as happened briefly after the last visit.

I hope that, in the spirit of Ecumenism, the SSPX invite the Holy Father to celebrate a Pontificial High Mass at their church in North London.

You could just imagine the Magic Circle's reaction....

What a good idea. Let's do all we can to make the Pope's visit an occasion of division in the Church.

The news is leaking out in the UK media (no comment from the Bishops) that the Holy Father is to visit Britain next year. This is both undoubtedly true and excellent news. It is high time that Britain had a Papal visit - the last one being in 1982 and a great success.

What a pity that it took an invitation from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to bring this about!

Couldn't the Bishops have issued the invitation themselves?

Or am I missing something?

Gloria!

I understand that this is to be a State Visit. The Prime Minister can issue such an invitation. The hierarchy cannot.

Appparently it's news to our bishops.

Archbishop Vincent Nichols on reports of a possible official papal visit to UK

Archbishop Vincent Nichols, President of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, said:

"We are encouraged and pleased at the news which has emerged about the possible official visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the UK next year.

Surely the Prime Minister would speak to our bishops before issuing the invitation?

I expect so. Though he might think he could know the answer without asking the question. I hope so anyway. I didn't read the press report to suggest that the Archbishop was surprised by the news. It wasn't actually his to break. We all read about the invitation ages ago. It was for the PM and/or the Holy Father to disclose developments.

I wonder why it would be seen as an occasion of division within the Church? Surely, such a move would show an occasion of unity? Depends on one's viewpoint, I guess?
