Our parish is having a mission week. I would be interested to know if any members have been involved in this or anything similiar. This is a new event for us. I am really looking forward to it. The programme is: Morning and evening mass. (All Week) Mon: The real reason why Jesus became man. First three Commandments. How do I pray? Tues; Mary's role in our redemption. Fourth Commandment. How do I pray. Wed: The Holy Spirit, the forgotten person of the Blessed Trinity. Fifth and Eighth Commandments Thurs: Praying the Rosary Seventh and Tenth Commandments. The Person of Jesus. Fri: Devotion to the Holy Souls Sixth and Ninth Commandments Christian Marriage and Family Life Sat: Annointing the Sick Sun: Close mission at all masses with renewal of Baptismal Promises and Papal Blessing for those who attended the mission. Feel free to give your comments please on the above Thanks karenjane |

Father Francis is a Franciscan. PP informed me he is also very talented and is going to sing and play music afterwards. All donations welcome. I'm sure there will be plenty of parishioners there. karenjane |

Hi Karenjane, I was delighted to read that your parish was having a Mission week, I suspect that these are much rarer than 20+ years ago....When I was growing up in the '70's it was a two week affair, and involved house masses across the parish for the first week, followed by nightly preaching/confessions in the second week....The Redemptorists provided the clergy for most of the Parish Missions I attended, and they were always well attended....Admittedly, I was "resting" for a number of years, but I haven't come across a Parish Mission in a long while...I hope it goes well, and it may have the beneficial effect of bringing back some "resting" Catholics to the Church as well as reinvigorating the regulars..... We had a mission in our parish about 4 years ago with a couple of follow up visits after that. It went very well at the time and the services were very well attended. The vast majority of people seemed to be spiritually refreshed. Personally, I don't like this type of concentrated effort and get uneasy in the revivalist type of atmosphere but I was in a small minority, I think ,and others were very enthusiastic. Not sure about the long term impact. I felt at the time that it spiritually refreshed those who were already conscientious Catholics and that those who were lapsed shrank even further back from this type of approach. That is an impression only and for all I know there may be half a dozen "regulars" sitting round me who came back through this mission. In any event, enthusing existing conscientious Catholics is good enough reason . John |

I guess there are missions... and then there are missions! This evening, I was busily welcoming folks to Mass, when in walked a family announcing they wished to become Catholics. Now I've had many interesting things happen to me over the years - but this is the very first time THIS had happened! This year we have a record number of people wishing to become Catholics in my parish - several times the number on any previous year here. And to think, before we started our publicity campaign with leaflets and posters three years back, it was extremely rare to have anyone interested at all.... Those who think all that's needed is to say a prayer and God will deal with it, aren't bothering to listen to the reply!

It is possible the leaflets helped dispel the misconception that Mass attendance is restricted to Catholics. |

Euntes Docte Omnes Gentes ... In simple language Jesus was tekking the Apostles to "get of your backsides and go out and spread my word." A very uplifting account Anne-Marie. |
