Mrs Cherie Blair speaking at Edinburgh International Book Festival Said "The Catholic Church was out of step with the needs of career women". despite being a devout Catholic she uses contraception. She personally feels the Catholic Church should take a more positive attitude towards contraception. (Sunday Times 30/8/09, p6) karenjane |

Cherie is a dear and took a lot of stick when she was wife to the PM. Now that she is wife to the ex-PM there is no need to take her more seriously than anyone else! Pax CARLO |

That being so, there's no need to invite her to events, like she has anything valuable to say. Edited by Clare, Monday, 31. August 2009, 20:43.

Mrs Blair speaks of her personal opinion. http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/news/display.var.2528212.0.Blair_end_Churchs_hard_line_on_birth_control.php
Reports say Mrs Blair urged the Church to reconsider its teaching. She did no such thing, she expressed her personal preference for what she would like the Church to do. The reports all refer to her as a devout Catholic. How the heck do journalists know who is and who is devout? That is known only to the person and God. |

The papers annoy me, giving the impression that having been wife to a Prime Minister is Cheri Blair's greatest achievement. She is a successful barrister specialising in two fields, Corporation Law and discrimination. Add to that, she is a judge, could end up as a judge in the High Court, Appeals Court or eventually Lord (or Lady?) Chief justice. |

Voicing an opinion, and even questionning some of the Church's teachings as we mature in faith is one thing, and could be seen as part of the process of growth, as long as we are open to Catholic teaching. Deliberately going against Church teaching as Cherie has done, quite openly, wrt contraception, and encouraging others to do the same is plain disobedience. It wouldn't matter whether she was Ms. Booth, QC or Mrs. Bloggs, housewife. It would still be disobedience... In reference to the title of this thread, it is Cherie who is "out of step". ps: I would rather be a faithful Catholic, barefoot, pregnant and tied to the kitchen sink than a successful career woman living a life of sin any day! You wouldn't happen to have a definition of "devout Catholic" would you Rose? It could be useful for us to have one that we could all agree on. |
