I don't usually stay up this late, but I am on my last cup of tea and reading Ann-Marie's comment about t'other channel reminded me of the days when the BBC used to close down for the night at a sensible hour, I think at 23:00hrs. and play God Save the Queen.
I think this tradition was dropped in the eighties. Can anyone remember?

Radio 4 still closes with the National Anthem.

I had an idea that BBC TV closed with the Epilogue.

Radio 4, what a wonderful channel, its programmes are often the best way to spend an evening.
However reminiscing about the good old days when England won the Ashes as one sat listening to Test Match Special in a deck chair with a glass of wine in the glorious August sunshine... Ah those halcyon day. Wait a minute that was only last week the good old days are now and yet to come. The past is full of happy memories and things we try to forget but as Christians we should be looking forward with hope and joy... and yet. Posey you are wise to think back to the days of yore when the BBC played the National Anthem at the close of the day, for Christianity is rooted in the past and there are traditions and customs which we should treasure and use as inspiration.

But back to the good old days when the world could be put right by a scruffy dog and a moustache on a spring and all was calm on the river bank, happy days. Thanks for the reminder Posey.

Definitely mid eighties.
1997 was the last time Carol Hersee and the Test Card were seen.

“It is most laudable in a married woman to be devout,
but she must never forget that she is a housewife.
And sometimes she must leave God at the altar
to find Him in her housekeeping.”

Some memories are good look back on, but as you say, we are bidden to look ever forward with joy as Christians.
I suppose the internet is a mixed blessing , it is a phenominal power of information used properly is a great tool of learning, which I would have found very useful in the past.

RADIO 4??? Dear me... don't you mean the BBC Home Service?

I remember LISTEN with Mother on the radio... just once in my early years at primary school when, for a reason I never understood, the whole class had to listen to it, after lunch I think.
I do remember Bill and Ben on TV... don't forget Weeeeeeed :clare:

And many at my school in my teens left lessons to hear a radio programme for which I'd been interviewed :bl:
Wellll, how was I to know how it would sound when I honestly answered a question?
I'm a Catholic... I'm not supposed to lie... :bl:

Listen with mother.

When I start a car journey with my wife and daughter as passengers, I often say "Are we all sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin."

I thought Radio 4 closed with this:

I'm away, so can't check, but from memory that introduces the shipping forecast. Radio 4 then closes down. Then the National Anthem. That may be the end of Radio 4 or the beginning of the World Service, but I think the former. Lilliburlero used to introduce the World Service, and may still do so.

Oh, yes...!

Yes, they were among my favourites, I also like Andy Pandy.

I remember coming home from school at lunch time, and mum would always have her favourite programme on called , The One O'Clock Gang, usually featuring Andy Stewart clad in kilt, singing a few Scottish songs.
