STONES OF FLORENCE

In Piazza Santa Maria Novella
And outside the Duomo
The tarmac has crumbled
Beneath the shoes of pilgrims
Now the cobble stones of old
Are revealed once more
Still firm and smooth
Steady foundations of rock
Casting aside their feeble coverings
Of pitch and grit

Outside Santa Croce
And all around San Lorenzo
The patterned paving that once
Bore the hooves of horses
And the carriages of kings
Has broken through its flaky topping
Of modern pastry crust
Emerging once again
Triumphant and firm
Warmed by the midday sun

So as the ancient cobbles of Florence
Once hidden by inferior pebbles
Continue to rise up
Into the sunlight of this golden city
Shall we also reach for the light
And cast aside the cracked and faulty covers
That were laid down
On our liturgy
And on our bedrock
So long ago.

Carlo

Should the first line read: "Satan Maria Novella" or: "Saint Maria Novella"?
