Pope Benedict XVI has been admitted to hospital after a fall while on holiday in northern Italy, but the Vatican says he was not seriously hurt.

Pope breaks wrist after slipping in bath

ROME (Reuters) – Pope Benedict slipped in the bath Friday and broke his wrist but aides said there was no cause for concern about the 82-year-old pontiff's health.

"He slipped in his bath this morning. He was taken to hospital for check-ups. It's nothing serious," Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said.

The German-born Catholic leader walked into hospital himself in the city of Aosta in northern Italy, where he is on vacation in a mountain chalet, and was treated for what the Vatican said was "a slight fracture to his right wrist."

The Vatican said in a statement that before going to hospital, the pope "celebrated mass and had breakfast." Doctors have put his injured wrist in a cast.

but she must never forget that she is a housewife.
And sometimes she must leave God at the altar
to find Him in her housekeeping.”

VATICAN CITY, 17 JUL 2009 (VIS) - This morning Benedict XVI underwent surgery at the Umberto Parini hospital in the Italian town of Aosta for a fracture to his right wrist. He had suffered a fall last night in his chalet at Les Combes in Valle d'Aosta where he is spending a brief holiday.
The Holy Father arrived at the hospital at 9:45 a.m. this morning. "Even so", declared Holy See Press Office Director Fr. Federico Lombardi, "he celebrated Mass and had breakfast early this morning".
Later the Pope "underwent an operation to realign the fractured fragments and fasten them through osteosynthesis, using a local anaesthetic then applying a cast. The Holy Father's general condition is good" added the Pope's doctor Patrizio Polisca, specifying that "the Pope will return shortly to his residence".

Prayers for a speedy recovery :beads2:

Pope Will Recite Angelus Tomorrow After Surgery for Fracture

By Lorenzo Totaro

July 18 (Bloomberg) -- Pope Benedict XVI will tomorrow recite the Sunday Angelus prayer as planned, two days after successful surgery for a multiple fracture to his right wrist suffered in a fall in Les Combes in the Italian Alps.

The 82-year-old pontiff will be in Romano Canavese in the Piedmont Region tomorrow for the celebration of the Angelus “as per the announced program,” the office of Bishop of Ivrea, which oversees Romano Canavese, said in a statement published on its Web site. The office also said it had received a confirmation from the “Vatican authorities.”

Benedict underwent surgery at the Umberto Parini hospital in the city of Aosta, capital of the neighboring region of Valle D’Aosta, after suffering a fall in his chalet at Les Combes where he is on holiday, the Holy See said late yesterday.

German-born Joseph Ratzinger, who in 2005 became the oldest-elected pope at age 78, celebrated his daily mass this morning wearing the cast on his right arm, his spokesman Federico Lombardi said today, according to news agency Ansa.
