It seems there are a few people "in the know" at the Vatican who are given to gossip, at least according to Rorate Caeli

From the Web Site of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. This is definitely a change for the Vatican Department of the Apostolic Signatura. Archbishop Burke was our bishop here in La Crosse and will be with us on 16 July to dedicate his "baby" - the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe's Basillica (which is really beautiful). Then AB Burke will leave for Rome at the end of the summer. His remarks follow the announcement. Sorry, the video isn't included here. Archbishop Burke To Head Apostolic Signatura, Church's Highest Court The following is the text of Archbishop Raymond L. Burke's statment regarding his appointment as prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. To view a video statement from Archbishop Burke, click on the play button (►) in the video window below. The appointment was announced at the Vatican on Friday, June 27, 2008. Today, at noon in Rome (5 a.m. CDT), it was announced that His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, has named me prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, effective immediately. With the announcement, I ceased to be the Archbishop of St. Louis. I am deeply humbled by the trust which His Holiness has placed in me, and, in priestly obedience, I have pledged to serve our Holy Father to the best of my abilities. Although you will no longer pray for me as your archbishop, especially during the celebration of the Holy Mass, I ask your prayers for me, that I may faithfully and generously cooperate with God's grace in fulfilling my new responsibilities. Leaving the service of the Church in the Archdiocese of St. Louis is most sad for me. It has been an honor and gift for me to serve the archdiocese over the past four years and five months. It had been my hope to serve here for a long time, but, as the bishop who called me to priestly ordination often remarked, "Man proposes, but God disposes." I trust that doing what our Holy Father has asked me to do will bring blessings to the Archdiocese of St. Louis and to me. St. Louis is a great archdiocese which will always have a treasured place in my heart. In a particular way, I am saddened to leave my fellow priests, whom I have so much grown to esteem and love. Often, I have spoken about the remarkable unity and loyalty of our presbyterate. For me, it has been a special grace to work with them in the service of God's flock in the archdiocese. I thank them for the priestly fraternity which they have always shown me, and for the generous obedience with which they have responded to my pastoral care and governance of our beloved archdiocese. With regard to the governance of the archdiocese, the College of Consultors will meet to elect an archdiocesan administrator who, with the help of the consultors, will govern the archdiocese, until the new archbishop is appointed and installed. Please pray for the College of Consultors and for the archdiocesan administrator whom they will elect. Again, I ask your prayers. You can count upon my daily prayers for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, always. |

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Archbishop would have contributed more to the Church by continuing to serve in the front line rather than going off to head up a Vatican Department but hey I was a civil servant myself! John |

HOLY SEE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR 2007 VATICAN CITY, 10 JUL 2008 (VIS) - The Council of Cardinals for the Study of Organisational and Economic Problems of the Holy See held its 42nd meeting in the Vatican on 3 and 4 July, under the presidency of Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B. A communique published yesterday afternoon explains that the consolidated financial statements of the Holy See in 2007 - presented to the assembled cardinals by Archbishop Velasio De Paolis C.S., president of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See - showed a deficit of nine million euro: the difference between an income of 236,737,207 euro and outgoings of 245,805,167. This follows a three year period (2004, 2005 and 2006) that had showed a total surplus of 15,206,587 euro. As regards the institutional activity of the Holy See (Secretariat of State, congregations, councils, tribunals, the Synod of Bishops and various other offices), the communique recalls that this produces no revenue. The sector of financial activities (seven consolidated administrations, the most important of which is the Extraordinary Section of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, APSA) showed a surplus of 1.4 million euro, as compared with the 2006 surplus of 13.7 million euro. This decrease of about 12 million euro, the note explains, "is due above all to a sudden very strong reversal of trend in fluctuations of the rate of exchange, especially of the US dollar." The real estate sector closed with a net gain of 36.3 million euro, higher than that of 2006 which stood at around 32.3 million. The activity of the five media institutions connected with the Holy See (Vatican Radio, the Vatican Printing Office, the Osservatore Romano newspaper, the Vatican Publishing House and the Vatican Television Centre), closed with a deficit of 14.6 million euro, "substantially due to the deficit of Vatican Radio and the publication costs of the 'Osservatore Romano'". Nonetheless, the Vatican Printing Office and the Vatican Television Centre closed with a surplus of 1 million euro and 458,754 euro respectively. The Vatican Publishing House also closed the year with a surplus of 1.6 million euro. The Roman Curia employs a totals of 2,748 people (44 more than in 2006), of whom 778 are clergy, 333 religious and 1,637 lay people (including 425 women). Pensioners number 929. The communique goes on to announce that the consolidated financial statements of the Governorate of Vatican City State in 2007 closed with a surplus of 6.7 million euro, a drop with respect to last year's surplus of 21.8 million. "There has been", says the note, "a considerable and sustained economic and financial commitment to the protection, maintenance and restoration of the artistic patrimony of the Holy See (restoration of the Pauline Chapel, interventions on the basilicas of St. Paul's Outside-the-Walls and St. Mary Major), as well as elevated costs for the internal security of Vatican City State". "For the financial year 2007, the Governorate of Vatican City State undertook to support the costs of Vatican Radio, contributing to covering half its deficit (12.2 million euro)", says the communique. Offers from the faithful to Peter's Pence, the fund which goes to the Holy Father's works of evangelical solidarity, fell considerably with respect to the preceding year. In 2006 they stood at 74.6 million euro, while in 2007 they only reached 50.8 million. The communique mentions a single individual "who has chosen to remain anonymous" who made an offer of 9.09 million euro to the Holy See. Finally, contributions from dioceses in accordance with canon 1271 of the Code of Canon Law, reached the sum of 18.7 million euro in 2007. |

Hi Rose, I think that site is a great idea. In the States JW's target Catholics quite a lot. They trade on Catholic's ignorance of their own religion. The web site Catholic Answers have been running a campaign recently trying to make American Catholics more aware of the fact that JW's are targeting Catholics across the country. I have the dubious distinction of living about 200 yards from a Kingdom Hall. My estate contains about 60 houses, which makes it easy for them to notch up the required number of visits Witnesses are expected to make each week. Over the years I have had some interesting encounters Asking them in for a cup of tea doesn't arf take the wind out of their sails

Ignorance of their own religion, or ignorance of Scripture? Unable to reply "In context, the meaning of that verse is...................". |

One suggested that if I liked gardening I would spend my time in Heaven gardening. On the tip of tongue was the response that I would prefer to be in Hell. (jokingly of course) |

We moderators thought that with the new layout, it would be nice to have a section for Prayer Group, so that members can open a topic for each request they wish to put to members. Here it is: http://s10.zetaboards.com/Catholic_CyberForum/forum/3000226/ The new section is in the Prayer, Liturgy and Sacraments Section. The original Prayer Group thread is in there, I am working on making individual threads from recent posts - from May onwards. It takes time! |

"Day for Life" was not mentioned at our church. I think we could do a tremendous amount to help people who are mentally ill. When a new Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall was built in our area, every member of the community was involved. My friends told me, and old lady with early dementia was given simple tasks to do, that would not put her in any danger, helping with the workers' and she went home feeling valued. We could learn from that. |
